The transition from communism and the results of the absolutely disastrous privatisations and welfare cuts (very likely the greatest reduction in the quality of life in history, other than maybe slavery of various indigenous people here and there) along with the loss of land, respect and influence fucked them forever. It was Krushchev that doomed them by restarting commodity production for profit. After that things could only decline, with excess profits being made, the Soviet leadership had money to pocket, leading to the absolutely massive corruption we know today in the oligarchic capitalist Russia, along with a reason to cut down welfare etc. The result is the shitshow we see today.
