I might have a theory. Women always prize their hair, it's always extremely important to them. So whenever a woman shaves her head completely, that means something extremely traumatic happened to her, or something is just very wrong. So it triggers this response in me.

Not necessarily, they do it just to look masculine as you said. Some girls just like looking like boys instead of looking like a stereotypical females, they cut their hair short, wear boyish tshirts and whatnot. It's queer, but they feel like doing it, doesn't mean they've been traumatised or anything. Some women also try it out as a new haircut for a change, because they're bored of having long hair all the time.
