Russia is just another country and we should treat it as such, pursuing simply normal relations. The fact that it has strategic nuclear weapons that can destroy the United States does not mean that much since the relationship is mutual.

I am simultaneously concerned by the fact that Obama did not stand up to Putin over Ukraine at all, and that the democrats are trying to out-hawk the republicans on Russia. We should have been more considerate of Russian interests over the Balkans, missile defense, and NATO expansion, but reacted more strongly to the invasions of Georgia and Ukraine.

I know the facts: Russian peacekeepers were there since the 1990s and the Georgians fired first. Nonetheless, the U.S. should have pushed back harder against any Russian claim to special rights in the so-called "near abroad" and supported countries that wanted peacekeepers out, earlier and harder.

I like Russia's culture and history and have considered learning the language in the past (mainly to read the literature written in it), but don't really pay attention to their government and treatment of its citizens. I'm just told that "Putin is an asshole and meddled in our elections."

The south-western part of Georgia was also autonomous until mid 2000s, and there was a Russian garrison there. The central government got rid of the local ruler and brought it under direct rule, Russian troops left, and nothing particularly bad happened. The idea that South Ossetia and Abkhazia would be permanently brutalized under central rule was always BS propaganda.

In any case, this is getting into the weeds. The basic points are: the U.S. should not see Russia as an enemy, but should not give it special privileges either. Simple policy.

This is not quite right. In the eighties and early nineties, Americans had a lot of good will among the Russian people, but we squandered it all by backing Yeltsin's corrupt re-election, (wrongly) getting all the blame for bad macroeconomic and privatization policies, and pursuing a foreign policy of alternating between ignoring Moscow or treating it like shit. During that brief window, propaganda was not the biggest problem at all.

Maybe the Russians here can correct me on the above. How popular was the U.S. in 1991? Maybe it was only a Moscow/Leningrad/elite thing, not a general population thing. I only know Russians from the cities.
