/trade war/

try me yuropoor edition

>Preparing European steelmakers for a bleak scenario, the EU’s Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström said on Tuesday (22 May) there were “signals” from the US administration that it would impose tariffs on EU’s steel and aluminium exports or enforce other types of restrictions.

>Trump granted a temporary exemption to Europe on the tariffs but set 1 June as a deadline for finding a solution. His ultimate goal is to reduce the US trade deficit vis-à-vis Europe.

>If he is not satisfied with the European offer, he could impose 25% and 10% tariffs on Europe’s steel and aluminium exports to the US, respectively.

>Diplomats noted over the past days that Germany was pushing for starting trade negotiations with the US administration in order to avoid the tariffs and the start of a trade war with Europe.

Germany breaks ranks again huh?

China did the same thing. It's funny how this plan has worked so far.

Thats what Trump's speech about "many lost Chinese jobs" was all about?

The last time the US tried something like that they got their shit pushed in

he's all bluster and appeasing to his boomer base.
He's also said the same shit about China, but is desperately trying to save ZTE

Starting a trade war is always dumb, even more so doing it with the EU

The last time was in the early 2000s. Europe was still a consumption powerhouse and the US in a small recession.

It's 2018. Europe is trapped in an eternal financial crisis and the US is doing well. The parties are also in complete disarray so trying to target influential Republicans is pretty much pointless.

The EU will crush all opposition. China, the US and Russia will all fold before us in the impending war

We grew more than the US in 2017, pretty much everyone in the EU is doing well. Eastern Europe is booming.
We are also about to finalize new trade deals with Canada and a bunch of other countries. If the US is doing so well I don't see reasons to resort to protectionism
