I did learn it for some time in school. Its only useful if you're planning to work as a teacher or archaeologist. Not much for everything else.

There's even a speech of the last Byzantine Emperor which I have stumbled on and it's much easier to understand than pure ancient Greek texts and exempts

It was the lingua franca of the Persian Empire when Alexander the Great (the reverence of whom became popular among Aramaic speakers, and the calendar of Seleucus was used along with A.D. until the 20th century) conquered it, and when people talk about Arab scholars saving Greek science, it was actually Aramaic/Syriac-speaking Christians, who translated to that language first. Arabic words from Greek came through this language, like Injil for bible, from Angalion, from whatever it is in Greek. So there are everyday words from Ancient Greek, while names like Thomas and Martha/Marta are presumably from Aramaic. So it's a subject in itself, I don't know all the details.
