I don't mean this as another boring >DAE WYPEPO??? XDD thread, just wondering what makes this country popular with westerners.
I like Japan too but maybe for different reasons

Westerners' view of Orientalism have kept them to think Japan's amusing.

after the ww2, America thought it's good to convince people that Japan is no longer a bad country mainly because of the cold war
and then Japanese stuff started to appear in American media as a good thing since the 50s-60s

Since the Meiji Restoration that Japan has been the most westernized country in the Far East.
Now it doesn't really matter since the others have catched up but Japan was the first.

Exotic yet westernized.
It represents the template globalist dream of a world in the western image.
Korea is also liked for the same reason but Japan is the more successful example.

I think America made the base of anime popularity
everyone has watched Ninja turtles before anime became popular

People are friendly, even if it a somewhat “fake” friendliness.

Anime is more popular in Europe than America. TV stations make a lot more money with shows they own so there are very few foreign productions shown and Americans mostly don't know them

and I think it helped anime and Japanese games to gain popularity a lot in the west

Because east asia is exotic but not a shithole

They are as advanced and developed as we are, but also still different enough to feel exotic.

Few other places check both these boxes when you think about it from an American perspective.

When I was finishing high school I was super bored and wanted to learn new language. I was always interested in Asian languages because I wanted to know how those characters work. At first I wanted to learn Korean cause I was playing sc at the time but there were like no good textbooks. But Japanese material was everywhere (thanks weebs). Eventually I've started reading about bonsais and got into teas. Also they have beautiful nature. So many mountains and forest. Definitely want to go there some day.

So yeah, you can like Japan and stuff they do even without liking anime or having yellow fever.

We don't really see martial arts and stuff like that as specifically Japanese. It's more generic Asian or even specifically Chinese

At the mass level there *wasn't* much interest in Japanese culture, but for tastemakers it was common even before World War I. Google "Japonisme." Mass culture interest in Japan came during the bubble economy and even more after anime was broadcast on TV

I don't like anime but I think Japan is cool for all the weird kooky shit that comes out of Japan. It's the same reason I like Tim and Eric and Eric Andre.
