Slavic people are not an ethnic group. There is no Slavic ethnic group. There are Slavic-speaking ethnic groups. Bulgarians are not Slavic, we are of mixed origin. Generally in Europe, there are many ethnic groups - Germanic (England/France/Scandinavia), Celtic, Slavic and so on.
To answer your question.. for the same reason, Germany, France and England never unified as a single nation despite being ''Germanic'', because do not identify as ''Germanic'', but as their own national identity.

Yes, that's what i said - Slavic languages are part of the Slavic language family, just like Germanic languages are part of the Germanic language family, and same for Romance languages.
As for Russia.. it's all part of the Empire games, just like Nazi Germany was looking for some pretext to unify their occupied territories and justify their role as the ''leader'' by claiming they belong to some ''Aryan family'' BS, same with the Russian Empire. I've heard genetic studies that say that most Russians have of Finnic ethnicity.
English people are a mixed of Germans and French, i.e. they are Germanic people with some Celtic DNA.
French are mixed of Franks, Gauls and Celts. Franks and Gauls are Germanic, Celts do not exist anymore.
Celts do not exist anymore, just like Thracians do not exist anymore, and Bulgars do not exist anymore. There are many, thousands of ethnic groups similar to Celts all across Europe, the myth that eastern Europe is only One ethnic group is just a myth, a ridiculous one.

That's the common misconception. Anyone who has studied the topic in more depth would know that there is no such a thing as ''Slavic ethnic group'', there are many Slavic speaking ethnic groups. Bulgarians are of mixed origin - Thracians and Bulgars, but we speak Slavic language, just like French people are germanic but speak Italic language.
