A lot of reasons, first he was an ex commie terrorist who tried to overthrow a democratically elected government in order to spread communism. Second his presidency was shit, he fucked up in many ways but to give you an example our state oil company went bankrupt due to mismanagement of his party.
Also the whole "caring about the people" rhetoric is all media bullshit to boost his image
