Should I keep learning kanji mixed in words in Anki 2k or should I switch to learning kanji individually. I still haven't started reading material.
Henry Ward
individual kanji study should just be something you do on the side as a supplement
Jonathan Reed
I personally had success studying them individually, but it took a fair amount of time and effort to get through them, so I'm honestly not sure if it was worth it. I doubt there's any data out there to draw any conclusions on which method is better, so 99% of the time people here are just going to tell you to do whatever method they used.
Elijah James
What he said As a personal opinion, I think it's better to study Kanji in context/combination rather than individually. It isn't efficient to learn them individually, then realize how fucked up some resulting compounds of two kanji in terms of either meaning or pronunciation.
Brandon Garcia
all I know is I wasted months on RTK and I actually made cards for all kanji out of paper and all that shit, I literally have a kanji box in hindsight I was this close to becoming reddit pasta at times
Owen King
Maybe what the German poster asked was a Japanese word which is supposed to be totally obscene but people are using it casually in fact I presume. So, it’d be >チンカス Or something or something... Did I get the point?
For reading purposes I think learning kanji with words is probably the best way to learn them. You can do individual kanji study if you have trouble with remembering a specific kanji or if you are mixing up similiar looking kanji
For writing them you would probably have to study individual kanji more

>I literally have a kanji box Are physical flashcards reddit? It's my preferred memorization method. The only downside is how much time I waste actually making them. I can't fucking figure out how to print double sided flash cards so I just end up writing the other side by hand :^(
Flashcards for kana is a meme. You can do physical flash cards for words or kanji but this method is less time efficient than srs.
Jayden Stewart
>Are physical flashcards reddit? no, I just spend a shit ton of time on making all my cards and then of course for the actual individual kanji study which wasn't efficient in the slightest
Isaiah Peterson
This sounds really similar to a Spanish curse word.
Matt vs Japan recommends individual Kanji studying.
William Evans
>飼い主
I just realized most words don't do the kanji-kana-kanji structure (it's usually kanji-hiragana or pure hiragana, so is this an actual word, or a compound?
Related: what is the formal grammatical term for the -い form of verbs, like 飼う in this case? I'm having a blackout on it.
how many westerners that speak japanese actually live in japan? seems like any time i look at real statistics it's such a small number they basically dont exist compared to the pinoy/chinese/korean etc expats, but on the internet you weebs are fuckin everywhere
Brandon Johnson
だいぶ上手くなってきたなw 理解できる文章が増えてきたよ これからも頑張れ

>so is this an actual word, or a compound? why even draw a distinction, I think it's a bit like asking if lawn mower isn't an actual word
inb4 some linguist comes at me, I don't care
Hunter Jackson
褒めてくれてありがとうな!
Ayden Mitchell
>how many westerners that speak japanese actually live in japan? about 3 or 4
Juan Hernandez
>renyoukei Yes, thank you!
>why even draw a distinction So that dictionaries don't have to list Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän.
Brody Barnes
I do SRS. I just use the physical flash card rote to remember my daily new words.

I'm watching a vid comparing songs from different games and, as expected, people are giving their opinions. However a lot of people after stating what they liked, ended the sentence with "好きかな" I was under the impression that かな was supposed to mean like "I wonder.." or "Hmm.." I'm thinking it's because it's rude to directly state a opinion, so they try to minimize it but using かな, but that's just a guess.
Hudson King
link? sounds a bit strange 2bh if it's not meant as a question
I'd read it like "I guess I like the xth one (best)" or something along those lines

we need more burger to pick up learning japanese
Justin Sullivan
アメリカのバーガーです。日本語を勉強します。

I liked that idea you (or the other german guy) had a few weeks back to expand the content of the thread to anime and other shit to boost posting to but I suspect I'm in the minority on that. Everyone on this fucking board seems obsessed with anime though, even the ex-yugo generals have been overrun by it so maybe it would work.
Juan Ross
You speak pretty good English, Serbja-san. I might be able to study Japanese with you some time. Wanna do it?
Leo Ramirez
Well I'm native speaker so I should hope my English is good. I've only been studying for a few months though so I don't think there would be any benefit to either of us at this stage. I just like to hang around here cause the communal feel I get makes me less likely to say fuck it and quit as I'm prone to do.
/a/ gets everywhere, it's in the nature of Jow Forums after all.
Angel Cruz
Maybe burgers go to /jp/'s DJT.
Ian Ortiz
Started fresh last Saturday. Almost done with hiragana.
Angel Long
Thanks, it was worth a try I guess, but as some other user said there most likely isn't a real reason to visit a japanese media general over the specific boards
Tyler Reed
Ah okay, that's fine too.
Dominic Perez
There's plenty, just most have learned Japanese already and have no use for this thread.
Carson Wilson
Bump before sleep
Nicholas Brown
Oh my nangeye tokey high kin nigh.
Mason Butler
What do you read? I'm and encounter maybe 2 per book for modern literary fiction, rarely any for an average LN, 15+ per book for pre-war literature. I plan to continue padding my grid but I would be just fine never learning another kanji ever again except for pre-war literature (which, judging by videos I've seen, the average Japanese is not very good at reading either).
Gabriel Miller
I meant to reply to this guy.

Is this a stupid idea? I finally found a jap community paper for my city and there's a ton of ads in it. Some are for english lessons. I kind of want to sign up because it'll put me into contact with a lot of jap speakers. I figure I can show up and maybe make some friends and help them learn english so they help me learn jap. Anyone ever do anything like that before? I'd have to talk to the teacher/organizer of the thing to see if they'd allow it but I think it's a good idea.
Carson Rodriguez
You're better off signing up as a teacher rather than a student.
Jackson Bell
I don't think I'd like teaching at all. One on one tutoring would be nice but I couldn't stand up in front of a class for hours at a time.
I read relatively easy LNs, VNs and anime. But I always add words in their kanji form if possible, so I end up getting a lot of kanji for usually-kana words. Ever seen the words べらぼうめ?あんぽんたん?なきじゃくる? They're mined as 篦棒目、安本丹、泣き噦る。 After seeing the word 篦棒目 in the dictionary, I looked up the 篦 kanji and found out it is a variant form of 箆, a usually-kana word (へら) which means spatula, so that's another kanji to the pile.
No idea how many new kanji I'd find a day if it weren't for that. I'm done with Jouyou and Jinmeiyou, and there aren't many kanken pre-1 kanji left to learn, next I'll be left with a 2000+ pile of kanken 1 kanji to absorb.
Matthew Myers
Chinese is easier than this
And I can pick up plenty of Chinese girls with it, but all my cultured media is in Japanese, can I learn both simultaneously?
Joshua Martinez
Not impossible, but bad idea.
Jose Clark
i started learning kana for some reason one summer, i think the way it was a symbol for a whole syllable rather than one letter interested me. then a couple of singers i liked motivated me to learn more (二階度和美、チャランポランタン、青葉市子) and now im really interested in kanji
Daniel Green
meant to type 二階堂和美
Leo Murphy
What's the difference between and ?
Matthew Allen
/jp/djt used to be run by some autist who turned it into ojt, but other than that it's more elitist
Ayden Morris
>二階度和美、チャランポランタン、青葉市子 i know literally none of them lol can you recommend some of their major songs to me?
I don't give a fuck about Japanese language but my new flatmate (girl) moving in soon is fresh off the boat from Japan. Wat do? Is there any cultural shit I have to be prepared for?
(Not looking to bone her just make her feel welcome)
Christian Price
None. She should be the receiving end of the culture shock (given she's the one visiting), not you.
Nathaniel Jones
I'm trying to learn Japanese through Duolingo. Why do so many characters look the same? For example, "ro" is ろ, while "ru" is る. So, I think, maybe the "3" shape means "r", and something about that loop in "ru" makes it have an "u" sound. But there are other lookalikes that don't add up - "ku" is く, and "gu" is ぐ. Why is it the same but with those little dashes? Duolingo only teaches me to remember how each symbol sounds, not why they look that way.
Jack Allen
is she qt?
Angel Butler
first of all, don't use duolingo for japanese.... ever second of all, why does an A look like A and not like a B? who gives a fuck.. but to answer your question, apparently it went sort of like pic related
Are you using the app? Don't use it as it does not have "notes" containing explanations. In fact, avoid Duolingo.
Tyler Cox
>Duolingo only teaches me to remember how each symbol sounds, not why they look that way. That's why you read an actual grammar book. Also the "little dashes" morphs the consonant sound as follows: k -> g, t -> d, s -> z, h -> b. It's pointless to think why so many characters look the same, it's like asking why is E and F look similar.
Jack Gomez
oh ok, it's a post from reddit.... moving on
Nolan Howard
That's... Confusing. So "ku" is written similarly to "gu" because they sound similar, but with your voicebox engaged differently?
Wyatt Jones
But "a" doesn't look like "b" but with two dashes beside it. Why do some Japanese characters look the same but with a sort of accent?
Henry Scott
stop trolling and go back to /jp/
Aaron Allen
okay ;_;
Sebastian Reed
Nice pic but it's really, really far-fetched how the kana morphed from the original kanji.
yea, the one for へ always makes me lol it looks like as if some dude couldn't come up with shit and then just went on lunch break
Dylan Roberts
yes ;_;
Logan Hill
why the sad smiley, do you have a gf? otherwise you could give her the dicku maybe
Justin Hall
Just admit you want to bone her lol
Blake Cook
I want a qt Jap gf tbqh but I look like a Russian henchman

If you put on some kawaii girl clothes I might consider it, provided it doesn't get back to my homophobic countrymen. Don't want to get ostracized from society, know what I mean
