Russian anime community seems much less hostile than the English one. Video games/VNs/etc. are never fantranslated into English anymore while when I look up obscure Japanese things there's almost always a Russian fan translation.

Yeah it's weird, I never find English fandubs anymore but it seems almost every foreign TV show/movie has been dubbed by some Russian. Is there a reason for that? I heard it was some tradition that was born in the USSR when one guy would translate and redub a foreign movie himself to show underground.

Yes, that was 'the funny parody dub' genre, but actually tradition is much much older. While at the west foreign language movies almost always used to use subtitles, in USSR it was dub. Funny thing is usually dub was of amazing quality.

Not in USSR but in 90s. Well, maybe they started in 80s but they're known as the 90s thing. they're still popular on Rutracker, some still do modern shows. Shows that aren't licensed are translated by some of semi-pro teams. I have no idea how do they earn money though. Their work is as good as real studios, they also seem to hire real actors.
