I think back in medieval times France would quite literally zerg rush Europe because of massive population advantage. But something happened and the most fertile country in Europe (after Ukraine perhaps) is quite depopulated.

It gets worse when you look at regional subdivisions. The west of this country is insanely densily populated.

Lots of Dutch people own houses in the south-west. From what I've heard from a relative living there, there's been some controversy in the Dordogne about Dutch buying houses and renovating them badly, like totally modernizing the exterior while the rest of the village is still quaint medieval style. On the other hand British people, also very numerous in the area, are renownded to take care to respect the local architecture.
