They're supposed to be kept cool. The cans in the youtube videos has spent ages going through the post, and therefore gone rancid. The fish is still supposed to be recognisable as fish, not the flesh coloured soup you see in the videos.
If you find one you should also open it under water, to avoid the worst of the smell.
