This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
(Cross-thread) >accepting christianity and getting closer ties to western countries would have certainly benefitted Japan, though to be fair it all worked out in the end. In the peace era of edo period, by the independent development of its unique culture, Japan was able to arrange her fundamentals to accept western ideas and adopt them in her own way. So dismissing Christianity was more or less better for us.
Ah that is an interesting view on the subject. I suppose you could say that the way it went was just the right way to make Japan propser but on the other hand i would atleast feel that the earlier Japan adopted western ideas the better. Though admittedly western idea weren't all tha superior yet in the 17th century.

>the earlier Japan adopted western ideas the better yep, desu there were a lot of such earlier beggars of western cultural/military ideas during Sengoku and Edo periods respectively, even though the extent was different in the eras so don't worry. Not every Japanese rejected western ideas.
That's what we were once taught at school, but that the hierarchy didn't actually exist is the current consensus among historians.

that might be due to Confucianism... desu such a classical view of Japanese hierarchy of feudalism as you quoted is being denied now. for sure there was the hierarchy, but the restriction of social mobility was not so limited as you imagine(for instance the merchant coule become a samurai). Certainly merchants were (considered to be )despised, but if truly so how could the ancestors of the families of former Zaibatsu prosper to the extent that during the Meiji era they could hold almost all of Japanese economy?
not bad, but I'm always being worried about my fucking awkwardness at English. I'm waiting for the answer to my grammatical question I posted in the last thread.

I'm a component of the thread actually, I as well participate in the discord threads of /cum/. they are so kind to me, but somehow if you wanna ask about grammatical questions, /brit/ is better.
>I'm waiting for the answer to my grammatical question I posted in the last thread. What question if I may ask?

It's a little far-fetched to exemplify the success of Zaibatsu in the Meiji era to disprove the disrespect to merchants in the Edo period, no? They are things of two different eras, and most Zaibatsu grew powerful because of war demands.
