"What is your hobby?": person doesn't even know if you have a hobby

As nobody wants to be laughed at by foreigners in his own language.
That reminds me: how do (native Japanese) decide when to use kanji and when to use kana? (in typing, at least) There doesn't seem to be a pattern in it: one sentence they'll use the kana version, the next the kanji. If I had to guess I think it has to do with removing ambiguity, but I can't say for sure.

Apparently it also has the meaning of 'secure' or 'lock' so it's literally 'Lock the lock'.

I think often it's just a matter of readability and avoiding overly big kanji cluster
