This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
I used to be just like everyone else. But now whenever I get a bonus I ask my (Japanese) wife what we should do and the answer is always an emphatic 「貯金!」. Makes me laugh.

Tomorrow I will eat lunch with someone I'm so excited that I can't sleep What should i doooo
But yes, my department (Electrical and Computer Engineering) is probably 33% Chinese and 33% Indian. The Japanese students that come here are usually English majors.
Ah okay, so your wife was university student in Japan and her major was English right? I guess Japanese women who study engineering and can use English are extremely rare..
I met my wife at the Japanese club of my university in America. She has been here for many years because her father works in America. Also, her major is Chemistry.

That sounds about right. But according to her she doesn't want to live in Japan because the society is too strict.
But I think I would like to live there for a few years. Japanese food is so delicious!! And her dad has a house in 日本海 that's very relaxing.
does drinking alcohol and smoking in japan have a stigma or is japan as degenerate as western countries?
Justin Williams
>society is too strict How does she know? She barely lived in Japan and only lived as a kid.

In fact it was the kind anons in this thread who helped me get the Japanese gf (now wife). They gave me advice about what to do when I meet her parents, what kinds of gifts to buy, etc.. I was very lucky because her dad loves American beer and I love Japanese food so we instantly connected.
I got the impression that drinking alcohol is mandatory and smoking is common. For men, at least. And I wouldn't call drinking お酒 degenerate. It's a very old tradition.
That's her impression, at least. I can't argue with her because I've never lived there. Perhaps she is just afraid of not being able to find a job and becoming 専業主婦.

Japanese men smoking rates in 60’s is over 80% and now decreasing. Normally Japanese women don’t tend to smoke because of stereotypes.
I vaguely remember you. One of my parents is originally from Niigata, 村上 is not very touristy and gets pretty snowy in winter. I don't think it's a good place to own a vacation house... does he have any connection to 村上?
Isaiah Wood
Perhaps She is from 群馬. In Tokyo, women who have job are common.

I like Murakami a lot (鮭!) but I've never been there in the winter. Her parents went there in December and sent me this picture.
Wife's mom is from Murakami and her father's house on nihonkai is the house he grew up in. It's near 越後早川駅 in an area they refer to as いなか.
I wish I had a friend like you. Shinkansen is very easy for foreigners to use but I'm afraid I'll never be able to ride 列車. All the timetables are far too confusing and I'm too shy to ask for help from 駅員.
Also, you may find this amusing: I like to wait at the railroad crossing near her dad's house and wave at いなほ. I wonder how surprised they are to see 外人 there.
Jack Morales
I've visited Niigata only several times but it's a very lovely area. Well, having to remove a few meters of snow off the roof every day in winter must be a literal hell, but it's a great place to see what Japanese seasons are like.
Elijah Williams
>surprised Oh they are so used to gaijin. JET program sends gaijin to every small village in Japan.

>of all the demons I've known, none could compare to you
(Ghost lyric) how would you translate this to japanese ?
asking here because the other thread is dead: does DJT still have a Discord? can someone please post an invite if it is still around? asked on /jp/ already but don't expect a response from the cancerous morons who have taken over that thread
