I am originally from Sweden and having lived in India for over 5 years for mainly job related business, I have come to the conclusion that the main difference is that the people in the North are generally uneducated idiots who make a lot of noise. Since they are a bunch of savages, they act boisterously and generally control the national discourse. Also, it's their culture that is generally portrayed in the West as representative of the entire Indian populace.

The South in contrast has always been the India's Brain trust. They are cerebral, highly cultured, educated, high achievers. Their culture is high brow and requires lot more study since it's rich and dense. People there have a level of education comparable to Scandinavian countries and generally migrate to foreign lands.

So while the North only thinks that they control India's destiny, in reality it's the South that will determine how well India will perform in the coming years.
