Most people are boring but there are few. Usually you know within the first three messages if they're worth talking to or not.

People who keep their profiles simple often have a lot to talk about one-on-one. People with long and descriptive profiles often have a basic personality.
I remember I used to send messages to my now gf that were thousands of words long. I also still talk to one German girl every so often through email and they're usually over a thousand words long too.
