The debate starts over the order of precedence between multiplying and dividing.

Modern usage, apparently you go through operation from the left side of the operation to the right. Yielding (6/2)*3=9

However, old usage has it that, historically, the symbol ÷ was used to mean you should divide by the entire product on the right of the symbol (see longer explanation below).

So in old usage, the equation would equal 6/(2*3)=1

So really, OP is a fag for posting such a vague problem and calling it an intelligence test. You are right that a more vigorous mathematician would make the order of operations more clear. In conclusion, modern pemdas rules give the correct answer the to the problem, which is 9.
