It IS a testnet. Nano was finished at testnet getting 7k tps and then couldn't break 400 on mainnet.
Also EOS is not a finished product when they decided to release without half their features. they are not currently multi threaded for example.

it doesn't work like you think. you can vote block producers in and out. if they don't provide value to the platform, they lose their place. also a decentralized autonomous community is being formed as a block producer, so anybody can buy in. it's more decentralized than having an arms race for hardware to mine blocks. also having an ICO for a year with tokens released daily allows everyone a chance to accumulate. there are less whales, and more competition built into the EOS system.
