The differece is the US is our strongest ally and knows it can conquer us at any time. No other nation would be capable to invading us across the ocean with the US as oyr ally so there is no risk of someone else annexing us. Sp from a political and financial aspect it maeks far more sense to simply maintain the same relationship with us.
