I think that we're generally closer than most other independent countries. It just seems like proper, old stock Americans don't have the sense of cultural continuity that recent immigrants have. It's been long enough apart that Americans are distinct, but not long enough that we have our own fully formed identity.

I feel a great sense of pride when I see stuff related to America before the 20th century. Where did it all go so wrong? Where did our proud frontiersman spirit go? Why did we replace it with this consumerist?

Well, for one thing we've run out of accessible frontiers.

The U.S. as the founders envisioned them didn't take the industrial revolution into account, and the country got too large/powerful too quickly.

The Unabomber was unironically correct in his analysis of modern American society. It's a shame the CIA drove him insane, he could have accomplished great things instead of blowing people up.

I unironically feel similar. Obviously it's not pride, but there's something very appealing about the early American attitude, even though the revolution was a bit childish. There seemed to still be the British enthusiasm and stuff upper lip in America, plus your own unique ideas of liberty and all that shit.

I like early America, I don't like modern day America. What I hate even more is that you can see early signs of us going down a similar path here.

I think it was far from being necessary. The issues didn't warrant an armed uprising at that stage and as they stood I'm not sure if they warranted one at any stage.
Basically I don't think all other reasonable options have been exhausted yet.

I think that most of the grievances were justified, but that the British desire for greater control was justified as well. They both behaved wrongly and that let things escalate into a rebellion. How it transformed from a rebellion into a declaration of independence is the strange thing to me.
