No idea if you're still here, but switch to Nova Launcher. It'll not just let you remove that Google thing, but you'd also have more options in terms of customisation.

I'm not sure you can. It depends on the phone, but if you haven't managed to remove it, you probably can't do it.
I understand that it's weird, but think of it that way: you get to remove that Google thing, but you also gain the possibility of customisation. You can change the app drawer's colour depending on the time of the day (or even change its' style), you can change the column and rows, you can apply icon packs, and there are a lot of stuff you could also do. And it manages to be light as fuck in the meanwhile.
I don't really use it to its' full potential, but it's an upgrade from the stock launcher on my phone in every way. Give it a try, if you don't like it, you could always go back.
