Cuba in the 60s-70s-80s was a literal state sponsor of terrorism. They were behind almost every communist insurgency in Latin America and even extended their business into Africa. There was a very very good reason to embargo them.

The Soviet Union was surprisingly more dependent on American and European money than you think.

The country has practically 0 natural resources of its own. Their entire existence relied heavily on the Soviet Union and China exporting shit their way. And because of Cuba being the only commie nation in the New World, meant it was pretty expensive to export shit to them. When the Soviet Union collapsed and Deng took power in China, resulted in them having to use the scarce resources that are on their island. And our embargo terms basically fuck Cuba even more since companies that even dare go into cuba’s waters are forced to quarantine their ships in American harbors for a week to a month.

So they traded being a US colony for a Russian colony and somehow we are to believe that that's fighting imperialism.

Cuba never abandoned its sugar and tobacco based economy so they have to import food as well since most farmland is used for cash crops. All the way back in 1963, Mao Zedong said that they should drop this neo-colonial economic setup and become self-sufficient in food, of course Castro just ignored this suggestion.

Consider that the Soviet Union and China were huge and completely self-sufficient for natural resources (unlike Cuba) yet still had utterly dysfunctional command economies. China eventually moved away from that to a certain extent.

I’m not denying the problems of Soviet style socialism, I’m saying that the embargo is a significant factor in problems facing Cuba, and that despite that handicap they still maintain living standards comparable to others in the region, countries which literally get loads of aid from the US.

The Soviets dutifully purchased most of Cuba's sugarcane each year even though they didn't really need it and they had sugar beets to supply their need for it.
