Alsatians speak German because it's the mandatory language they learn at school instead of English, dummy. But their native language is French.
I'm from Lille, but my mother is Alsatian, and when I asked my cousins from Strasbourg whether they feel more French or German, they replied French. But when I asked them whether they feel closer to people from Provence or Baden-Württemberg, they picked the latter. It's weird, but kinda endearing really. Sure they're kinda distinct from the rest of France, but France was never meant to be culturally uniform. We should feel proud of the cultural diversity of our regions, and stop having immature beliefs like believing that a balkanised France would somehow be better than what we currently have. France always was at the crossroads of Europe and always will be.
Tabloid headlines paint the UK as a dystopia (not saying there aren't serious problems here) but I doubt things would be that bad for a tourist. York, Lancaster, Bath, Edinburgh, Chester, Lincoln, Bristol, Nottingham can all be nice to visit. Or the countryside in rural England and Wales, could go sightseeing in the Lake District/Peak District or hillwalking in Snowdonia

Toll, mann. Ganz Episch. Danke.
I'm learning it here, and I've been told that they're teaching me High German. Is Hochdeutsch basically the better, more well rounded version or?
It is how it is, you won't find anyone younger than 70 that still speaks low german
He obviously voted for micron.
Well Low German is a dying language.
For some years the young people have been interested in their own language again and are learning it again. But mostly it is artificial, almost like Latin, and hardly usable for everyday life.
High German has many grammatical nuances, which is much more elaborate and also more precise - but it is also much more difficult to learn.
Not entirly true tho. Low German is unironically the official language of the Emden VW factory. Here the language is still alive, but we are just a small island
