Euros had it until recently. I don't see why you shouldn't have stuck with the age-old, tried-and-true practice.

America has always had higher levels of crime than Europe, and the crime has always been seemingly more severe.
Notice how that Dane that killed the Swedish girl about a year ago, that made international news. Stuff like that would barely make it past state-level news.
Hell there was a hit-man that got put to death two years ago in my state, he had killed like 3 people confirmed in the streets, and claimed about 15. Then he killed another two people in maximum fucking security. Yet,he only made the news because of the fact he was put to death, and for why he was (electric chair). And a big reason as to why was because he literally asked the judge for the death penalty.
Also: to add to the second part about race, the guy I am referring to was Italian descent (last name).

I think it is worth noting, however, that this was considered one of the worst criminals in the past 50 years in my state.

1. very often criminals are exonerated either while on death row or after execution. the legal system is incredibly flawed and there are regularly new breakthroughs in forensic science
2. many people consider life in prison to be a worse punishment than the death penatly
3. it is a principle of civilised society that violence should only be used where absolutely necessary. once the criminal is in jail it is no longer necessary to use violence on him.
