If I were in charge back then I would've given the natives the same rights as the European settlers, and done everything to assimilate them. Build schools, infrastructure, factories and employ them. I would've fought them if they revolted, though not as brutal as Europeans (for example we Germans against the Herero&Nama) did. Democracy is a flawed system which assumes the majority is always right. The mistake apartheid South Africa made was trying to establish a democracy but for white voters only. This of course created resentment and demanded transition to a genuine democracy where everyone could vote, and that's how things got fucked.
If they just dropped all pretense of democracy from the start and ruled as a dictatorship with a white dictator, but who governed for everyone (blacks and whites) it would have ended up better. Same with Rhodesia.

The funniest thing is that this "white" South Africa would be a worse place to live for many whites.
For example, my cousin lives in Johannesburg, he works in IT, his salary is only slightly less than he could make in the US in the same position yet since most of South Africans are extremely poor, services are incredibly cheap there, so his purchasing power is far higher than anywhere in a "developed" country, he lives in a big house, he has his own maids, he owns several good cars etc., while in San Francisco he'd probably have to share a room with this money, kek. And crime is not such a big issue if you live in a gated community with security guards. Just don't stop at robots at night.
