Mexico City has a bad reputation among Mexicans themselves, the ones living outside of it anyway, just like pretty much every big city in every single country has a bad reputation amongst everyone who doesn't live there (New York, Paris, London, Buenos Aires, Madrid, etc.). And also, because of a couple of pictures of an entirely different city, in a different state, that happens to be right besides actual Mexico City, called "Ecatepec", went viral incorrectly with the "Mexico City" tag.

Having said that, and while this city does have some very shitty places, in reality it is generally much better than what most people imagine. And yeah, tourists pretty much just stay in the good places, there's 0 reason to step in the shitty neighborhoods and they are completely avoidable. There are impressive ruins nearby, plus volcanoes, lagoons, canals, pine forests, and little colonial towns, with a great night scene, plus historical sites from the colony and Mesoamerica inside it. It is also incredibly diverse and cosmopolitan (with restaurants and people from all over the world) in how it looks, despite being so massive, you can feel you are completely different cities depending on where you are. But again, is a city of contrasts, you could see excruciating poverty right next to billion dollar buildings, and it does have slums, and dangerous neighborhoods, and the traffic is insane, and smog, lots of it.

Overall, it is a great place to visit despite the memes, yes.
