Nobody ever gave a shit about it, it's mostly impassible jungle mountains and was the southern reaches of southern Mexico, until Mexico just let them become their own country because Mexicans don't want to share a country with centracas (much in the same way Americans don't want to share a country with Mexicans).

It's like Mexico but more violent. It is also where all of Mexico's criminals come from. This is due to the 5+ decades of communist and American guerrilla warfare campaigns whose tactics were copied by the narcos and governments for general law enforcement duties.
We don't hear about violence from there simply because they're too poor for phones, cell towers, or telecommunications outside of large cities (and even then it is very spotty outside of the airport tourist payphones).

After Guatemala became independent (twice, once from the Spanish, and the other from the first Mexican Empire.) it formed a federal republic along US lines. which included El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Guatemala.
It lasted two years and collapsed in civil war between the liberal and conservative provinces which succeeded from the FRCA, Guatemala said "Fuck trying" when El Salvador declared independence. Making them independent countries.
tl;dr : Central America minus Panama and Belize, tried to do a USA. Ended up doing what Central America does best.

Belize: garifunas, mayan cities, few people, culturally more Anglo-Antillean than Latin American.
Guatemala: lots of Maya speaking people, great Mayan ruins (like Tikal), pretty colonial towns, rain forest.
El Salvador: small country, everything is close (big capital, colonial towns, volcanoes, forest, beaches...everything at one hour drive), Nahuatl culture instead of Maya.
Honduras: great caribbean beaches, nice food, two big cities (Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula), rain forest.
Nicaragua: peaceful, charming towns (Granada and León forma example), fucked by the US during the cold war, nice nature and beaches.
Costa Rica: peaceful, one of the greenest countries in the world, eco-tourism, beautiful nature, surfing, developed for Latin American standards.
Panama: more South American culture than Central American, big modern capital, the canal, bussiness, very green.
