I’ve been all over the state because my brother is an economist at Berkeley and I go visit him every once in a while.
Btw California doesn’t have near the kind of crime other states do. My favorite place, Oakland, probably has the worst neighborhoods in CA and nothing’s even that bad. In a few years the ghettos will be gentrified out, it’s already happened to most of them.
Even Long Beach is full of millionaires now. If you’d ever been to California you’d know it’s just a very different place from eastern US. I prefer living in the South.

CA feels really artificial to me. No brick buildings (everything’s this really ugly stucco), no real poverty or crime like other parts of the US, CA just seems removed from reality.
It’s an exciting time to live in (certain parts of) the South right now. Our major cities like ATL, Charlotte, nashvillle, Raleigh, are having a big revival. But unlike other parts of the country we didn’t lose our identity. I can still walk around Durham and hear banjo music.

Most of the rural Areas of Northern California, Oregon, And Washington are cozy and pretty safe places. In Socal there isn't much outside of the two big cities and Central Valley. There are a lot of Chicanos especially in Central Valley and the cities, make of that what you will.

At least in California most of the population lives in big cities which are generally more liberal. I've been thinking about it and it looks like most of the people who have moved to the West Coast in the 1900s were young and liberal themselves.
