Afaik this was done in Germany in the 70s too but lastet one or two years and than they abandoned it. Afaik it should teach kids more "real" mathematics and help to think more abstract.

the problem with that is the kids who need extra help basically have shitty math and shitty reading class all day long, with no time for fuck off (fun) stuff like gym and art or whatever. all work and no play.

so liberals accuse schools of segregating not only "disabled" kids, but also on basis of race.

it's taking the amount that's being subtracted (12) and adding numbers to it to make them whole numbers until finally you get to the original number (32). the numbers you used to arrive at 32 should add to 20 if done correctly. it's an extremely arbitrary and retarded system.

I agree that the process doesn't matter with commutative processes such as multiplication, addition, and essentially subtraction (which is negative addition), so the methods taught should be for streamlining mental math rather than paper math. But any brainlet should be able to add those numbers

They're trying to teach shortcuts to take when you solve math. Granted these are things you eventually figure out for yourself, but it's still interesting to see these shortcuts on paper.

Since most people know how to add and subtract while almost no-one knows about teaching elementary school, you get endless asspain about common core. One funny thing is that people keep reiterating they're chemical engineers or whatever high-status job, but still can't understand it, as though being unable to understand elementary school math is proof of superior intelligence

how is that a shortcut? The problem should be at most 2 steps. Another problem is that if you don't use the method taught and don't show all steps you lose points on tests, thus grades. The way math is normally taught here discourages figuring out shortcuts yourself

the problem with showing these methods is that you're supposed to figure it out yourself to really understand why you should use the shortcuts. Not to mention that mental math is almost always discouraged when learning these "shortcut" methods. Math should be taught through its actual rules by those who understand the shortcuts. If you want to improve learning, you need better teachers in smaller classes.

This is only for poor plebs. Rich kids get the real sylabus. Keep the masses stupid and they wouldn't rise against you.

it's not just poor kids, it's public education which includes some richer kids if you live in a small rich city.
