What is midsummer?

Pagan tradition, celebrating the day of the year that the sun stays up longest

>midsummer
ACHTUALLY
the solstice is the beginning of the summer

for me, something close to the concept of "mid" "summer" is ferragosto (Feriae Augusti) in middle of August; it's also the day the Holy and Blessed Always Virgin Mary, albeit it obviously didn't have any connection with the Catholic Church

>let me tell you about your traditions
fuck off southron

Everyone does this here. How do you celebrate it in Finland?

It's the middle of winter though

I were simply underlying a logical and conceptual mistake in the denomination of your heretic and barbarian tradition. Similar pagan traditions resist only as celebration of Saints (so, they've been assimilated in the Catholic rituals) in some borgo, whilst something really similar to your holiday here is in the middle of August.

We have a bonfire and drink heavily. There's lots of other folk magic and traditions, but mostly people just go to countryside, go to sauna and drink a lot.

Sounds similar to here then. Good stuff

Are you enjoying a genuine Swedish midsummer?

Yes, it will be very pleasant I think! Lots of good food and family. Shitty weather though

We have a folk magic tradition in Finland that involves making a flower bundle of seven different species of flowers and putting it under your pillow on midsummers night. That way your future husband or wife will appear to you in your dream. Something worth trying i guess. Then again this is Jow Forums so people would propably just have sex robot dreams.

Sadly you're probably right

This happens every fucking year. 90% of this summer has been amazing so far and now it gets cold and rainy. Why its always shit weather in Midsummer?

>the solstice is the beginning of the summer
No.

>A solstice is an event occurring when the Sun appears to reach its most northerly or southerly excursion relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere. Two solstices occur annually, around June 21 and December 21. The seasons of the year are determined by reference to both the solstices and the equinoxes.

>The word solstice is derived from the Latin sol ("sun") and sistere ("to stand still"), because at the solstices, the Sun's declination appears to "stand still"; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's daily path (as seen from Earth) stops at a northern or southern limit before reversing direction.

It is literally midsummer as it's the turning point of the sun, you mong, hence the "second half" of summer begins and it's getting colder.

We have that as well, but basically no one does it anymore.

>dares to copy-paste me a wikipedia
>let me re-define what summer is in order to grant some etymological meaning to my definition of midsummer
>btw I didn't eve read the fucking article I'm copy-pasting

>It is literally midsummer as it's the turning point of the sun,
that's solstice. The fact you use the term "midsummer" for solstice or, better, for your pagan holiday, doesn't make solstice the middle of the summer seasons.
>you mong
fuck off.
>hence the "second half" of summer begins and it's getting colder.
The hotter season is July and August here. Between the summer solstice and the equinox there's still more light than darkness and it's not getting colder as soon as solstice passes by, that's not how seasons work, my underage Northern fellow.
