Yup. It's amazing how he single handedly caused East Asia to stagnate for millenia, causing East Asians to fall so far behind Europe. In the past century the region has begun to catch up, but it's hard to see if it will ever completely modernize. One man can truly wreak havoc.

Europeans also had more land per capita, Chinese could even eat less than some stone age tribals living in lush forests or w/e, doesn't matter. Chinese had better farming by 15th century still as far as I can tell and rice is more efficient in general.

The Chinese got ahead but because of Confucianism they rested on their laurels. The Europeans started behind but their culture allowed them to constantly improve. Even in the 17th century when China might have been stronger than European countries, the foundations had been laid for European dominance

An assumption that their ideology was destroyed by the cultural revolution. Mao himself was known to hate confucianism and traditional chinese culture, but cultural ineptness could have been intrinsic after all.

China has only been technologically advanced and powerful during periods like the Tang when Caucasian conquerors founded a dynasty. They stagnant when native Chinese rule.

Is like Russia. Rulers since Peter the Great have tried and failed to civilize them.

I think Japan is more confucian than China and Korea. They have to bow to eachother and shit.

Maybe China but I don't think any country is more Confucian than Korea. Physical customs aren't nearly as significant as Koreans taking elders words as law and offing themselves if their 20 hours a day of studding doesn't get them a 100%

sounds more like he just wants to secure his 'lofty' "mandarin-speaking westerner" position. how incompetent was the company that he worked for that they didn't check the chinese company's quality beforehand

Absolute obedience and respect for hierarchy and your elders, who are perfect and must be copied in all points, to the detriment of innovation and competences.

The result of this is a massive stagnation and a massive releuctance for any innovation: you are to copy exactely what your elders were doing, and not doing it in other way. You invented a way to improve field yield? Nope, fuck you, that's not how your elders were doing. You invented a way to improve steel forging? Nope, fuck you too, you'll do as your elders taught you. You have ideas to improve administration of the state, military tactics, new schools of philosophy? Nope, fuck you, fuck you and fuck you.

There's also the fact that children are the inheritors of all their elders sins, even those from 5 generations 100 years ago. Which is why you'll never have peace and reconciliation between Korea and Japan for example.
