Yeah, at the end of the day the US was just acting in its interests. Taking over Japan meant it would eliminate the risk of the Japanese rising again just as the Germans had after ww1, and Japan would serve as a strategic point against the soviets.

You are right that the nuclear bombs were fundamentally evil. But they were a pragmatic evil devised in the interests of the US.

I understand they were getting stomped by the soviets in 45, but what I’m wondering is would that really translate into them easily surrendering? Our forces were under the impression that invading japan would be a horrific fight, but you’re saying they would have just broken morale? I’m just not piecing this together

An American invasion would have been costly because it would have been launched against areas that the Japanese had been entrenching and deployed all their forces in. The Soviets would have landed in Japan essentially unopposed.
