Indians only got it big in Eastern Africa because British colonial policy was sawing off the legs of blacks while Indians got off mostly scot free. Then whites relaxed and did little because they were on top and nothing could change that while Indians although restricted from owning land could otherwise economically compete with whites.
While whites went into farming (and failing multiple times) or worked for the colony, Indians went into commerce, manufacturing, trade real estate you know shit that actually "scales up" as a state/colony develops. So they started getting more money, investing more and entrenching themselves as well as growth of Indian schools (compared to black ones the colony wasn't out to fuck em over in East African segregated schools)
They even got sizable voting power due to their economic clout. After the Second World War, Asians were found in all occupations in Nairobi and the townships: in business, the police force, bureaucracy, and the professions.
The British basically helped make Indians grow so hard. With no competition from blacks because of colony policy and Whites not taking risk Indians got it.
