I mean the time when french culture started to emerge, that is that of Francia and later Carolingian empire, was relatively peaceful for Gaul, whilst for other ex-roman territories it was generally fucking horrible. I think because of that France managed to have some sort of proper identity, culture and organization which survived all the wars of the 2nd millenium.
