The Catholics in the north were downtrodden marginally, which sparked a number of groups rising. (Provisional IRA, NICRA, etc.)
The Troubles never happened because the south wanted the north. They happened because Unionists utilized their higher standing and mutual connection to the UK in order to essentially kick the Catholics out of any say for the country in order to prevent what happened in the South.
