China

Anyone here who traveled across China? It's one of the richest countries culture and landscape wise. I've heard there used to be huge cultural difference between regions on China and it still exists, but sadly not so much today. Does that hold truth and people from say, the northwest are completely alien to coastal provinces?

Thanks but Jow Forums is not interesting in international culture mate. If I posted a wojak or pepe and a ' . ', this thread would have many replies.

Anyway, do you know of any interesting places there?

I'm ethnic Han Chinese and backpacked Southwest China for a month. Most of the pics posted here are from Yunnan and Guizhou. China has 56 officially sanctioned ethnic groups and you can find a lot of the minorities in these provinces. The ethnic groups are varied in terms of culture and food and such, but I felt like the grinding poverty of these rural regions prevented me from enjoying it properly - if you're looking for "comfy" rural experiences a la Western Europe, you won't find it in China. Wealth is concentrated in the cities. But it is fascinating nonetheless and would recommend anyone to go.

What do you mean?

I don't know. I always thought about it but I bet beyond the coastal area there will be very little to see and in general most Chinese cities will be 99% commieblocks. There must be a reason they all come here while China itself is not so popular for tourists.

Not true at all. You see a lot of chinese tourists abroad due to China's sheer population - domestic tourism makes up the majority of the industry. Spots like 九寨沟,乐山大佛,黄山 are packed shoulder to shoulder with day tripping peasant tourists spitting and shoving everywhere (Chinese are lazy as fuck though so a little 30 min hike in any of these spots and the tourists evaporate)

Go to mafengwo.cn with Google Translate to see the places domestic tourists visit.

/trvl/ is slow as fuck
I mean Jow Forums is supposed to discuss international culture but most people are busy calling each other subhuman

Tell me more about Chinese domestic tourism. Do they have things like party holidays for younger middle class Chinese? Where they drink on the beach?

Yes and I learned to love it after a few days of culture SHOCK

There’s singapore city and taipei

Wasn't that 5000 years claim shown to be silly? They've been through so many empires and different "cultures". Might as well say that Senegal has 12000 years of culture.

Chinese culture is literally the world most practiced culture

China is the third most visited country for tourists

Not really a thing in China. Chinese beaches are a total meme, closest thing to one would be in Hainan but it doesn't even come close to SEA. Friends get together and drink all the time, though, and sometimes they might go on a little excursion to an overcommercialized 古镇 (old preserved town) with a tour group. Wealth is such a recent phenomenon in China that these pastimes haven't really had time to mature.

Is it safe for a white girl to backpack alone in china? Will I get gang raped or killed for my camera? Can you do it without speaking Chinese?
These photos are pretty amazing.

It's safe as fuck. Violent crime is non-existent, partly because Chinese people aren't really violent people (different story in Inner Mongolia though - their pride culture is crazy) and partly because you'll get fucking drawn and quartered by the government for it. There might be the odd pickpocketer in a large city, but if you're just hanging out with a large camera around your neck, odds of anything happening to you are essentially zero.

As for Chinese knowledge, a little bit will really help you. Pretty much no one knows English. A lot of people go there with no Chinese knowledge whatsoever, though, so YMMV.

Sounds good, thanks for answer bro. I know not to backpack in India. And really the chinese tourists here are just as disgusting as the indians, I thought they may be similar. I am pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, it's a complete meme.

Thanks for your posts user. Did you choose Southwest for a specific reason or didn't have time to see other regions? I also really would like to know if people in rural villages have kept their lifestyle and culture more than in metropolitan cities.
/trv/ is travel only, Jow Forums is for all culture related topics, besides /trv/ it's a very slow board.
Thanks again, Hans!

- Beautiful, unique landscapes
- The fact that I've already seen most of China's big cities as well as a lot of medium sized ones
- Didn't go to Xinjiang/Tibet/Qinghai/Gansu because they're too sparsely populated and public transport is smelly and miserable and slow. My dream is to rent a car and just spend a couple months driving around these regions hiking with friends.

Really need to go visit that user in guangzhou (A city in China)

Regarding the preservation of culture: sorry. The ones who preserve it at a surface level do it for the tourist money. Mao completely and utterly annihilated Chinese culture. Not even the remotest village escaped the tendrils of the cultural revolution. But all the subtleties still exist: mannerisms, disposition, little quirks and idiosyncrasies that persist in big-city life and make China very unique even compared to neighboring cultures.

Yeah, from what I've seen in pics and videos it's really pretty. The moment I saw a pic of these mountains near Guilin I immediately remembered of Dragon Ball's landscapes, after a bit of lurking I found that Toriyama took inspiration from Southern China.
I see, that's kind of sad, and hearing it from someone who visited it is worse. But at least they still have their food, architecture and festivities, besides what you said. Do you speak Mandarin? And what about hospitality outside tourist destinations?

My Mandarin is conversational but just incompetent enough for people to ask me if I grew up outside the country, lol. Outside of Shanghai and Guangzhou, the two pretentious cities, everyone's generally pretty friendly, though probably not Iran/Caucasus level. For a foreigner, though, I'd imagine you'd get a lot of curious looks, people pointing, and an occasional "hello" (according to my Canadian friend.) If you can speak some Chinese and compliment whatever the local food is everyone will love you and treat you like a literal god.

Huh that's pretty interesting, I always thought Chinese were "colder" and indifferent to tourists. If one day I have the chance I'm definitely visiting China.

China is to Chinese culture as Europe is to European culture. Unless you don’t think a shared European culture exists?

China is autistically safe for foreigners.

The only unsafe places are in the south near the drug dealing/production industries. Cantonese, of course.

There’s so much wrong with that “response” that I’m not sure where to start.

Why do idiots screenshot shitposts and spam them everywhere like they are somehow persuasive? It just paints you as a Jow Forumstard with mental illness.

>Mao completely and utterly annihilated Chinese culture. Not even the remotest village escaped the tendrils of the cultural revolution.
Source for that claim?

There are four villages that people did not know existed in southwest China until the 1980s. Now they are really well-known. But how could your claim be possible?

You mad, chankoro?

Attached: 1526772872965.png (800x1672, 209K)

I visit China all the time and the swiss “chinese” guy is lying about Chinese culture. The cultural revolution was concentrated in the cities and had no effect on the rural areas where 90% of Chinese lived. He is lying his ass off.

If Chinese culture was “annihilated” then Chinese language, religion, festivals, food, and styles would not exist anymore.

The ethnic group defines its culture, and not some butthurt westerner who wanted to see a backwards “traditional” shithole with claw-feet women, slavery, and mass opium abuse.

Is German culture dead? They have no resemblance to the culture of 1000bc. Religion, language, food, hair styles, mannerisms, traditions, everything is different now. So who lost their culture? No one. It changes with the people.

i went to china and it was a mixed bag. the people were nice, but they also behaved weird. the cities were impressive but it was all just a facade. i went to an area of beijing that felt like western world but at the same time i lived in a apartment in a gated area with tennis, pool, security etc. but when i turned on the shower there came sea weed out of it, and the elevator looked like it was about to collapse.
one things for sure is that they don't know how to drive

a guy showed us a small dirt road in the mountains to get to a less touristy part of the great wall of china, and there were a slide you could use to get down of the mountain. great route if you don't mind potentially dying lol

unless you're staying in beijing, shanghai or hong kong you should probably wait 5-10 years before visiting. the rest of the country is in a awkward fase between civilized and cavemen-tier. also watch out for taxis trying to scam you, i think it was red taxis that you should avoid. at least in the shanghai area
