It really doesn't, american bus systems are already inefficient as fuck and dont have or need the capacity for kids, all it will do is slow those bus routes down and have a bunch of kids on them that always chimp out and stuff. America doesn't have any other means of public transport besides buses in most places outside of big cities so theres no need to have that many public buses open and even if they did the school routes would slow them to a snails pace.

The city bus doesn't go to every house in a rural and semi rural area.
Also parents like to keep their kids safe and they are safer since some pedo can't abduct them from said bus even if that is extremely rare it makes them feel better.

Now how to you honestly propose those kids get home? Public transport might make sense for the tight clusters, but what about all those kids in the middle? Do they just not get an education or do they have to walk 5 miles by themselves on the side of the road or do you honestly think that the city/state/whatever should run a bus to all of those houses.
