Yeah but then you have to realize that they were basically feudal society with very little resources that practically slingshotted itself into an industrial nation in a short period of time.
The very fact that they went from horses and swords to aircraft carriers in that short span of time is very impressive. At the very least they had the common sense to see how backward they were compared to the west and swallowed their pride and went on a learning spree to catch up with them.
It's something akin to what modern day china is doing right now.
Look at India and China after their exposure to the west and how they industrialized. Look at the response of any civilization that the industrial revolution skipped when faced with the west and how they crumbled and took decades if not centuries to catch up.
And most importantly, despite the economic slow down there's plenty of cutting edge research going on in Japan right now. There has been lots of innovations to come out of the country.
