Alabama doesn’t have any real major draws but it sure as hell does try. We have 3 good universities and a NASA center and a lot of lake homes for rich southerners and a beach and a port.
Birmingham is the largest city and tries very hard to get its shit together and be a good place to live. It has a world class med school and a restaurant in Birmingham just won Best Restaurant in the Country from the James Beard Foundation.
Huntsville is the 2nd biggest and it’s growing very fast because there’s NASA and a tech industry there.

But otherwise, Republicans shoot down all the good ideas here or spend taxpayer money on vacation homes or stupid highway projects.

I was a cook for years (in America all restaurant kitchens are staffed by Mexicans) so I was around a lot of Mexicans. Their situation wasn’t bad at all. They were good at their jobs and got good wages. But if they fucked up and lost their job, they couldn’t get a new one in this state and had to move.
Kind of shitty because Mexicans here never cause any trouble. I never saw a Mexican do anything besides go to work and drink beer or listen to accordion music.

Blacks on the other hand are in a really shitty situation. They face widesparead discrimination from the authorities but they do cause a lot of crime.

Having grown up in MS, I wish I had better things to say about the state. But besides the tasty food and white sand beaches, there's really not much else. Most people are nice enough, but a lot of their outlooks are outdated to say the leasy, and there really isn't any desire to change that.

Also at a time when the whole South/Southeast is seeing a surge in population due to more manufacturing jobs and people migrating here from the north and west because of lower cost of living and better climate, Mississippi is the only state that is seeing a net loss of residents year over year. The economics management of the state is so poorly executed and corrup that most young people capable of leaving do end up moving away.

If you do want to visit, just take it for what it is, not what it ought to be. Because it will never be anything other than what it already is -- a land that time forgot.
