Why this region considered poor in USA? Tell me about this place.
Why this region considered poor in USA? Tell me about this place
It's very mountainous so there aren't any major cities with lots of opportunities, and a lot of the mines there closed making a huge part of population unemployed.
retarded working class keeps voting against their own interests.
if a politician has the right public image, they'll vote for him regardless of his stance on the issues.
coal mining was the primary industry. mines open and close, so not many major towns and cities form. coal mining is a hard and shitty life and isn't exactly something many people wanna spend their lives doing- lots of people
leave.
combine a dying industry with widespread drug use, you have a poor demographic that is the butt of every democrat joke. then we have a president who got a shit load of support by promising to fix everything and now they're mocked even more.
The Scots-Irish moved into the region in the mid-1700s, so we already have a fucked background. Then these idiots keep to themselves for a couple hundred years, interbreeding with other Scots-Irish so they get even more fucked up. Then they find coal and need to mine it, but they hate niggers so much that they do it themselves. Now all of these retarded inbred racists are mining coal, who are also indebted to company stores. Now repeat this for about another 100 years.
Appalachians are the result of 300 years of inbreeding from a poor gene pool, combined with extreme racism that works towards their detriment, and cap it off with problems like opiates and poor education. Sure, there are some nice cities and towns in Appalachia; but if you go too deep, you'll find that some of these fuckers don't even have plumbing or electricity.
This. If they just voted for a socialist the area would be an economic powerhouse.
North Carolina and Virginia aren't poor at all. Neither is East Tennessee.
Also this For example Trump has been bad for unions and a bunch of factory workers are about to lose their jobs due to tariffs but they still support Trump.
This. Also fracking and unsafe coal mining have caused serious pollution that makes water unsafe to drink.
>socialism
>economy
People all vote for incredibly corrupt republicans
t. live there
Politicians get caught taking kickbacks and taking/giving illegal payments all the time.
The most popular form of corruption is the highway system. Politicians have buddies in construction and they decide to build a $5bil highway to nowhere "for economic development" and give their friend a huge contract.
It was heavily propped up on coal and steel, and when that was ripped out from under its feet, it declined badly. The culture their is heavily blue collar, and they often refuse to adapt to the modern age. Some areas like Pittsburgh are better off, but they are the exception
It's mountainous and difficult to move around in, limiting capital formation. This means it generally survives by exporting commodities like coal and minerals.
Basically, if Russia were a region of the United States, it would be Appalachia
filled with d*tchlings
>combine a dying industry with widespread drug use, you have a poor demographic that is the butt of every democrat joke
Um...didn't West Virginia used to be a Democrat state until the 1990s?
>From the time of the Great Depression through the 1990s, the politics of West Virginia were largely dominated by the Democratic party. In the 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush claimed a surprise victory over Al Gore, with 52% of the vote; he won West Virginia again in 2004, with 56% of the vote.
ALMOST HEAVEN
>if they voted for a socialist the mines and factories would magically re open
Correct. He's basically saying Republicans are responsible for WV being fucked by generations of Democrat politics.
>rural
>climate/uninhabitable due to mountains and terrain restrictions
>poor living standard
>shitty income
>uneducated populace
>no reason to go there (no major cities, tourist spots)
>no career opportunities
>limited chances for higher learning
only good thing about these fly over states is the scenery. other than that, you're better off going to places like Texas, New York, California & Nevada,
>fucked by generations of Democrat politics.
Nothing to do with politics. People in WV are literal morons.
Used to be a massive union state. Democrats brought safety standards and high wages to the mines. But the mines closed and Democrats made the mistake of not blatantly lying to their faces and saying they'll bring coal back. It can't be brought back.
>Democrats brought safety standards and high wages to the mines
I'm pretty sure Appalachia was always a shithole and one of the poorest parts of the country.
You're retarded if you think Democrat policies ruined them. Without unions and workplace safety laws Democrats pushed for, those coal jobs wouldn't have been any good anyway. Regards don't seem to understand natural gas replaced coal
>But the mines closed and Democrats made the mistake of not blatantly lying to their faces and saying they'll bring coal back. It can't be brought back.
donald is doing the same thing. but this time, he's promising "clean" coal technology.
I just want them to be happy
>those coal jobs wouldn't have been any good anyway.
Since when was it ever good?
Miners used to be more like literal slaves. Paying people in "company money" that only let them buy stuff from their employer used to be a thing or they'd be dying from black lung. Coal work used to suck, but it sucked a lot less due to liberal work standards.
I want you to be sad
If you think socialism results in safer coal mines, you might want to check out China where hundreds die in mining accidents every year and safety standards are nonexistent. The only thing that improved mine safety was capitalist entrepreneurship when someone figured out how to develop and make a profit from equipment to improve the safety of mines.
>china
>socialist
Strange how leftists like claim to represent the working man yet have complete contempt for him.
>The only thing that improved mine safety was capitalist entrepreneurship when someone figured out how to develop and make a profit from equipment to improve the safety of mines.
capitalist entrepreneur, Don Blankenship, lack of safety regulations and violations of safety laws, lead to the death of 29 people.
It’s inhabited by blacks.
The 1950s are over, dude. The Democrat Party is the party of rich liberal coastal hipsters now, not the party of truckers and coal miners.
>I fight for the working class
>fuck those white inbred country rednecks lmao
Lmao, China is a fascist country. Everything they do is Nationist tier. If their were no rules against it, there would be no safety equipment at all in mines. Capitalism only increases efficiency in ventures that can be profitable for corporations. If a corporation has no interest in improving safety, they will simply not put money in to do it. The basics of the capitalist system is reducing costs to the lowest possible and charging the highest you can without destroying your product and image doing so. China never cared for these types of rules till recently
Appalachia hardly has any blacks in it.
Is China national socialist? It has it right in the name.
>t-they have a picture of Karl Marx! a-and it's ruled by a one communist party!
There's over 2,000 billionaires in China. If China was an actual socialist state, this number would be drastically lower.
Just how The Democratic Republic of Korea is really democratic.
How cute, he thinks the Soviet Union had any safety standards. Not only did accidents happen all the time, but they were covered up or claimed to be the result of CIA sabotage.
China has none either because the state does not make mistakes and you get black helicoptered for implying otherwise.
>There's over 2,000 billionaires in China
Yes, all of them CCP and PLA brass.
Is National socialism, not socialism?
is DPRK a democracy?
it's almost like things are In Name Only...
You're obsessed, mate. You equate safety laws with full blown sino-soviet socialism and can't explain how safety is even an afterthought in a pure free-market. Every country has laws and even the act of making new laws are inherently leftist. Somehow, in your peabrain, you think that means it's bad, communistic and ruining the country. The rule of law built the western world, get over it.
You yourself said that capitalism led to people dying of black lung at 45 and if only we had socialism, that wouldn't happen and when I pointed out the very obvious, that socialist countries like the USSR had no workplace safety at all, you experienced a complete mental breakdown and started calling me names.
>it's another thread where user thinks socialism=Stalinism
Marx envisioned anarcho-communism, you stupid idiot. Under anarcho-communism, the workers (not a totalitarian communist party) would own the coal mines and work collectively to improve safety.
IDK about him but I pointed out that government regulations had nothing to do with mine safety, it was because in the funny way that capitalism works, it's advantageous and more profitable to not have half your workforce get blown up in a mine explosion every year.
You're an idiot. I didn't bring up socialism. I brought up basic, safety and union laws. If you think that equals communism, America is already doomed and it's far to late to fix it.
I never opposed workplace safety, no, not at all. I was trying to tell water brained Bernouts like yourselves that socialism has nothing to do with greater workplace safety, in fact quite the opposite.
I can't even follow whatever you guys are arguing anymore.
Its rough and ugly and difficult land. Its poor now and always has been poor, and there's a lot of weird classism surrounding the region and stigma when people leave the mountains. They were poor as hell in the 1960s, they were poor as hell in the 1990s. They were poor as hell always, as they just aren't developed because people there are isolated.
Pittsburgh had some luck with iron manufacturing, nowadays they are trying to scramble for other things. Its still working class but less so. Some people blame coal mining but thats retarded, the region has always been poor and only a small amount of Appalachians ever did coal mining (most coal comes from Appalachia =/= most Appalachians mine coal). Bitching they don't vote democrat is also retarded, they traditionally did vote democrat and West Virginia was traditionally a big democrat state. But ultimately the Democrats couldn't bring them money and the Republicans at least promise to stop killing babies so there you have it.
Pic related is the electoral map in 1992, Clinton's first election. Appalachia is still dirt poor at this point, in spite of voting for the Blue Team. Clinton made a speech to them telling him he'd destroy poverty and help develop the region, and he didn't, at least not enough. Trump's fails might disillusion more people with Republican party as well.
Some Bernout leaf tried to say that coal mining was dangerous back in the 1800s or something (which it was) and capitalist pig mine owners exploited proletarian labor until unions and the great leftist Democrat god FDR told them they couldn't do that anymore.
I told him that that was total bullcrap and that mines got safer because the capitalist system allowed people to invent and make a buck selling safety equipment. I also told him that actual socialist cunts like the USSR and China had no safety standards at all and the latter has hundreds of deaths in mining accidents every year.
The only thing Bill Clinton did to help the working man was ship the working man's job to Mexico and China.
>You yourself said that capitalism led to people dying of black lung at 45
capitalist coal barons and their capitalist funded lobbyist(lobbying is capitalist) kept coal in the market, even when it was a proven health/environmental hazard, which lead to more people getting black lung.
how are you this fucking stupid?
You do realize people in Mexico say the same thing? NAFTA brought the end of farmer protections in country. US corn, which is often subsidized, was cheaper and better than Mexican corn. It causes millions of small time central Mexican farmers to lose their jobs. Those people immigrated to the US. If you look at a map now, the Northern Mexican states are wealthier than Eastern Europe and Central Mexico is Guatemala tier. In the same way that rust belt workers lost their jobs to Japan, China, automation, etc for the most part and made Calufornia and New York the undisputed juggernauts they are today.
Sounds like NAFTA etc is a 2 way shitshow then, so why does everyone say its good and its wrong for Trump to threaten it?
Not even a Trump supporter but it sounds like NAFTA etc is just shit for everyone but the rich.
China (a one party communist cunt) has the world's biggest coal industry. Try again.
New York is part of the old Rust Belt and California used to be a Republican state before Democrats turned it into a sinkhole since the 90s.
Because damage cannot be undone easily. Mexico and Canada are small compared to the US economy yet completely dependent. Ripping up NAFTA is enough for Mexico to be completely economically destroyed, again. Except this time, the immigrants won't be coming from deep Mexican states like Chihuahua, they all be coming from border states like Nuevo Leon. The best hope is to force Mexico to raise their minimum wage and work standards, that bridges the cost gap between American and Mexican workers. Case in point, the current Mexican minimum wage has a lower purchasing power than in the 90s. They're geared towards jobs too much and not enough about the quality of the work.
NAFTA fucked over all farmers, ranchers, factory workers, fucking everyone but the richy rich for all three nations
New York, the state, is a meme. I meant New York, the city. What I meant was as industries declined for a variety of reason, trade deals pushed for American tech and Services domination. Google is a global thing, wherever US tech companies were allowed access. So everywhere, but China. Canada sells more hard goods to the US than it buys. But, once money made off service oriented institutions are accounted for, Canada loses money on NAFTA. You have to realize, Services account for the majority of money made nowadays and the trade deals the US made were to capitalize on these high growth future industries.
So rip up NAFTA and let us all recover, like if you have a arrow shoot you you rip it out it causes blood but ok, then you can work on stitches. And immigrants are good thing, as long as its 2 way street. Mexicans work hard. Make immigration legal again.
Its like even though Trump is a meme retard I keep hearing that his most criticized ideas (like removing free trade) seem to be good for everyone in the long run, even if in the short run its hard its still the best thing to do.
>I keep hearing that his most criticized ideas (like removing free trade) seem to be good for everyone in the long run
Removing free trade is retarded
He promised to renegotiate NAFTA, which would ideally see equal benefits for all sides, but he seems hellbent on not even trying and just walking out and tanking the losses while Canada and Mexico go into economic depressions
If he walks on NAFTA nobody will fucking trade with us
>, that socialist countries like the USSR had no workplace safety at all, you experienced a complete mental breakdown and started calling me names.
alright, I'll try explaining.
Why were the USSR and modern day China are terrible at safety regulations?
political ideologies play a very minor part in this.
you see, The USSR and China were/are considered "developing nations". Meaning they were well behind the modern world in terms of industry and technology. Both cunts relied heavily on agricultural rather than industry.
in order to "catch up", industry was the main focus. This, along with very poor planning and execution, caused mass famines such as Stalin's 5 year plan and The Great Leap Forward.
It also doesn't help that both cunts suffered heavily from two world wars, political crisis and civil wars. This further delayed modernization and was something the US never faced.
in order to catch up with the developed world, regulations were/are non-existent. This means more industry, things are built much faster and more production. The same thing happened in the capitalist US during the industrial revolution. Look at photos of people building skyscrapers in the 30's and 40's. Regulation was non-existent in the US .
but what about modern day China? Modern day China is still considering a developing nation by the WHO and in comparison to other modern day cunts.
don't be fooled how parts of China looks like a modern nation. In comparison to the modern world AS A WHOLE, China is still very rural and developing.
This place is literally (literally) third world. The fact that you are posting on Jow Forums shows that your city is probably a lot better than appalachia. I've been to parts of West Virginia that don't have running water or electricity.
It's one of the most beautiful and culturally rich regions desu.
t. New Jerseyian
Our economy has always been mostly domestic. Trading with other countries seems to hurt them. We have a big population, can easily get a bigger population, all the natural resources we need. Free trade kills the environment and causes global warming (which we are supposed to care about but suddenly its a bad thing that literal tons of shit won't be shipped across the pacific ocean).
Why do we need trade?
They dont vote against their own interest though because they are religious
the part people really talk about is west virginia and below
western PA is nothing like them
That's right. Forgive and forget, it's what Jesus would do :)
Republicans are never going to end abortion because the day they lose that they lose about half their leverage with anyone whose not megarich. I say this as someone who hate abortion myself.
That said, Appalachia is traditionally democrat, any switching happened recently, and WV is democrat locally though more blue dog democrat.
Fuck off were full
"Democrat" Joe Manchin is what's called a Blue Dog Democrat, which is means that he's a member of the democratic party but votes with Republicans on basically every issue, but he'll say shit like "I'm for unions" so he gets a pass
Robert Byrd did a lot for the state as improving infrastructure though even if he was a racists asshole in his younger years RIP
The more you live the more you realize everyone is racist asshole
We have a shrinking population when not taking into account immigration
If we end NAFTA and our other free trade agreements we will get more local industry and more local pollution
We'd also technically have a big dip in our GDP and companies would lose billions, so it probably won't happen since it's their purse that funds DC's campaigns
Oh and pulling the rug out from under Canada and Mexico on a whim is going to paint us as monsters and unless we have a Berlin Wall on both our borders illegal immigration is going to skyrocket, and those jobs returned will be for naught
being workers, they should vote for someone who wants to improve working conditions and public services.
instead they'll always end up voting for the candidate with the most brutish appearance and the most vulgar language, because surely someone who looks like a caricature of a working man will think of the working class when he gets into office.
This, rural and suburban retards need to be culled so that city people can guide humanity into a progressive age.
It's just not a great place to live. Historically almost all the economic activity was subsistence agriculture because the soil is poor. Mining took off a little over a hundred years ago, an the area was briefly a far left hotbed as workers fought against mine owners for their rights.
Then oil surpassed coal and the place became increasingly economically depressed. Most people there try to get out, because politicians don't give a shit about Appalachia.
Sure, but not everyone was a member of the KKK
>suburban retards
they're sheep. If you cull rural voters and hardcore Christians, they'll fall in line with the rest of the population.
>We have a shrinking population when not taking into account immigration
Why wouldn't we take immigration into account? Its like saying "we have shrinking population when not taking birth into account". Immigration is how population grow.
>If we end NAFTA and our other free trade agreements we will get more local industry and more local pollution
Good? Why is a ton of extra pollution spread around the globe (transport across the ocean causes more pollution than all cars combined) and with third world populations least able to handle it a good thing?
>pulling the rug out from under Canada and Mexico on a whim is going to paint us as monsters
They will be helped in long run, like Canadian shows in . Short run, we all hurt. Long run, we all benefit. Isn't that what life should be?
>s illegal immigration is going to skyrocket
Then make immigration legal again.
>North Carolina and Virginia aren't poor at all. Neither is East Tennessee.
I can't speak for NC, but the areas that are shaded in Virginia are some of the poorest areas in the state.
I think SoVA is slightly worse off, but it's primarily because those areas in Virginia have a really good tourism business.
Hampton Roads, Central VA, and North VA, are the only "rich" areas of Virginia.
Of course, however, cities like Roanoke do exist, and that is a fairly rich city that is nestled in the mountains, but they are a stand-out city.
What is cull? Just murder everyone who is too "hardcore Christian" or lives too far away from the city center? Dont think that will work.
>Why is a ton of extra pollution spread around the globe (transport across the ocean causes more pollution than all cars combined) and with third world populations least able to handle it a good thing?
If places like Flint with no manufacturing industry can't handle their pollution issues, why do you think adding industry back there will make it any better
>Long run, we all benefit. Isn't that what life should be?
It'd be another diplomatic faux pas, we'd have slower economic growth, and would help to remove our already slipping influence on the world stage
>Then make immigration legal again
Incoming immigrants would work for less wages and harder than naturalized Americans, would still cost companies more, and the product itself would be more expensive on top of not benefiting the Americans who would like to do the jobs that "Americans don't want to do"
On top of that, tradesmen who would be needed to rebuild Mexican and Canadian industry would just fucking leave for the US
>Why wouldn't we take immigration into account?
See above
>i take post made on Jow Forums very seriously
>If places like Flint with no manufacturing industry can't handle their pollution issues, why do you think adding industry back there will make it any better
Why do you think it makes it "better" to give it to literal third world country? And add a ton to global warming by shipping stuff long distance? You know we are baking to death right? You know Flint water crisis is small peanuts compared to global warming right?
More manufacturing in Flint would add more money, more taxes, more funds to help shit. IF it even gets added to Flint, and it doesn't have to be.
>It'd be another diplomatic faux pas,
Oh nooo better let everyone suffer and die of global warming and long term economic damage other than "diplomatic faux pas".
>remove our already slipping influence on the world stage
Fuck our influence on the world stage, if its not being used to serve people (hint its not) then it sucks.
>Incoming immigrants would work for less wages and harder than naturalized Americans,
??? Good thing if we Make Immigration Legal Again, then they will get paid the same minimums as naturalized Americans, and we can wage raises as we will. America is a nation of immigrants, it always has been and always will be. The strongest labor movements have been led by immigrants.
> the product itself would be more expensive
Good we need less cheap garbage polluting the world.
>On top of that, tradesmen who would be needed to rebuild Mexican and Canadian industry would just fucking leave for the US
And tradesmen would leave for Canada and Mexico too as more opportunities arise there. Make Immigration Legal Again
how do i get a gf from there?
Global warming is a meme, poor waste regulation is not
>Fuck our influence on the world stage, if its not being used to serve people (hint its not) then it sucks
>hint its not
Based retard
>then they will get paid the same minimums as naturalized Americans
BASED RETARD
>and we can wage raises as we will
Oh my GOD you're so fucking SMART
>political ideologies play a very minor part in this.
You wanna bet? You were not allowed to complain about pollution or safety because the state is always correct and does not make errors. Also anyone in the USSR who organized a labor union got carted off to a mental hospital.
Don't forget also what happened to striking workers in Novocherrkask.
>Most people there try to get out, because politicians don't give a shit about Appalachia.
Right. That's because Appalachia is mostly white so wgaf. Now observe the huge efforts put into combating inner city poverty because that involves non-white persons.
No, it's overlooked because it's rural
Investments always go to cities where there is more opportunity for profit
It has nothing to do with race
>Robert Byrd did a lot for the state as improving infrastructure though even if he was a racists asshole in his younger years RIP
Wasn't he still using the N-word on the floor of the Senate up to the end?
This, if it was about race then Mississippi would be doing better and the south in general.
Fact is the country doesn't give a fuck about rural areas.
Probably, he was a confused old grandpa. He also endorsed Obama and apparently the NAACP liked him so who fucking knows
