I used duo starting but after a while I just started googling grammatical concepts and translating things from English to German constantly, eventually took a class in uni and ended up drilling the exercises from the book too. I'll post a torrent to said book as I think it still works but there's an accompanying workbook with a ton of exercises I couldn't find a link for.
While I'd never advise it as a solitary learning source, duolingo is fine for basics and early vocabulary but it doesn't explain grammar for shit so you'll need to be proactive with learning a lot of it elsewhere

I do my duolingo every day. It's okay for Spanish and German, but the Japanese course is terrible. I really need to find a better method of learning Japanese; I don't like flashcards, so anki is out. I also need to keep up with my German translation - I started picking random fanfics written in German to translate, but I've been pretty lazy about keeping up with it.

Lingo deer is slightly better than duo for Japanese as far as I know. And honestly man you kinda should be doing anki, by far more convenient than writing out flash cards. Once you get to an ok level of reading comprehension your vocabulary will explode so it's not like you'll use it for the rest of your days.
