Before this period most people of Poland considered themselves as "farmers", "blacksmiths", "carpenters" and so on. That's why the most popular surname in Poland : "Kowalski" comes from a noun "kowal" which means "blacksmith". These people whom you know as "Poles" today were no idea that they were "Poles" for all these centuries up to XIX-XX century. The problem is that a lot of diaspora Jews don't want to live in Israel because they would find it as deterioration of their standard of life. Call me a masochist, but i prefer such multi-national Poland. Ethnically, religious and nationally monoethnical Poland is a creation of Hitler and Stalin. Hitler removed our Jews. Stalin removed our Germans, Ukrainiand and Belarusians. And we pretty much became a mono-national nation. That's why i am so happy to go to my town's center only to see that most of people around me are not even Polish. They are foreign tourists, foreign students, immigrants from the East of Europe and so on. When i go through this crowd, Polish language can be heard not more than in 20-30% of cases. It makes me feel proud that Poland is slowly transforming into something that it always was in its whole history. Poland being a mono-national country is a tiny episode in 1500 years of our history.
