If you dig on their official twitter, you'll see their posts for that too, and it's not the only way people got ONT. It was all, or almost all given away for free, which is what makes the current pumps that mind boggling. It's good for those who participated in all of this, but it makes it thought to justify paying $9 a token now.

Actually no, nobody know outside Ontology that newsletter subs will be worth 1000 ONT. They decided that ICO will not be conducted and that is why they will give 1000 ONT to newsletter subscribers(i was one of them). When they told it, subscribing airdrop was no more.
