I've had mate many times, and it's good, but it doesn't really match high-quality teas. That being said, I've only had mate you find in grocery stores. Perhaps I'd change my mind if they're of matching quality to that of said teas.

No study has isolated the mate itself as the cause of the cancers, just don't drink it too hot and you're fine

Just avoid using a nickel straw (which is a highly common carcinogenic) and drinking it when it's too hot (this also applies to tea and coffee).
