National anthem thread

Post the lyrics of your national anthem, rate other ones and compare them with yours. Here's mine

"Soldiers are we
whose live are pledged to Ireland.
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
no more our ancient sireland
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the Bearna Baoil*
in Erin's cause, come woe or weal.
'Mid cannons roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song."
This however is only the chorus of the original song, which was also written in English unlike the official version which is in Irish. I'll post the extended lyrics if anyone's interested.

>Where is my home?

William of Nassau
am I, of German blood.
Loyal to the fatherland
I will remain until I die.
A prince of Orange
am I, free and fearless.
The king of Spain
I have always honoured.

To live in fear of God
I have always attempted.
Because of this I was ousted
bereft of my land and my people.
But God will direct me
like a good instrument.
So that I may return
to my domain.

Noble and high-born,
of imperial descent,
Chosen a prince of the empire,
Like a pious Christian,
for the honoured word of God,
I have without hesitation
like a fearless hero,
ventured my own noble blood.

After this sourness I will receive
from God my Lord the sweetness
For that longs so much
my noble mind
which is that I may die
with honour in the fields,
and gain an eternal realm
as a faithful hero.

I want to confess to God,
and to his great power
that I have never
despised the King.
except that to God the Lord,
the highest Majesty
I've been obedient

>inb4 honering the king of spain, cucks

>1.Verse which isnt sung because it was used a lot by the nazis
Germany, Germany above all,
Above all in the world,
When, for protection and defense,
It always stands brotherly together.
From the Meuse to the Neman,
From the Adige to the Belt
>2. Verse is also not sung
German women, German loyalty,
German wine and German song
Shall retain in the world
Their old beautiful chime
And inspire us to noble deeds
During all of our life.
>The 3. Verse is our national anthem today
Unity and justice and freedom
For the German fatherland!
Towards these let us all strive
Brotherly with heart and hand!
Unity and justice and freedom
Are the foundation of happiness;
Flourish in the radiance of this happiness,
Flourish, German fatherland!

Portugal anthem
youtube.com/watch?v=DdOEpfypWQA
Heroes of the sea, noble people,
Valiant and immortal nation,
Raise once again today
The splendor of Portugal!
Among the haze of memory,
Oh Fatherland, one feels the voice
Of your distinguished forefathers,
That shall lead you to victory!

[Chorus]
To arms, to arms!
Over land, over sea,
To arms, to arms!
For the Fatherland, fight!
Against the cannons, march on, march on!

[not officially part of the anthem - The anthem's official version consists of the first stanza and the chorus from Mendonça's poem only]
-----------------------------------------------------
Hoist the undefeated flag,
In the lively light of your sky!
May Europe cry out to the whole Earth:
Portugal has not perished
Kiss your merry ground
The ocean, roaring with love,
And your victorious arm
Gave new worlds to the world!

(Chorus again)

Salute the Sun that rises
Over a gleeful future;
Let the echo of an offense
Be the sign for a comeback.
Rays of this strong dawn
Are like a mother's kisses,
That keep us, sustain us,
Against the injuries of fate.

(Chorus)
---------------------------------

Est Europa nunc unita
et unita maneat;
una in diversitate
pacem mundi augeat.
Semper regnant in Europa
fides et iustitia
et libertas populorum
in maiore patria.
Cives, floreat Europa,
opus magnum vocat vos.
Stellae signa sunt in coelo
aureae, quae iungant nos

Europe is united now
United it may remain
Our unity in diversity
may contribute to world peace.
May there forever reign in Europe
Faith and Justice
and freedom for its people
in a bigger motherland.
Citizens, Europe shall flourish
a great task calls on you
Golden stars in the sky are
the symbols that shall unite us.

>German women, German loyalty,

>German women, German loyalty,
Yeah, I think I understand why

Most of these are awfully generic, descriptive, or straight up meaningless.
I like the Romanian, Slovak, and even Sw*dish lyrics, very poetic. I like my own too, it has a lot of actual content.

Swedish anthem is gay as hell. Slovak and Romanian anthems are generic too, muh we will fight.

The best anthem is the French, because it's the original muh we will fight anthem.

1
Awaken thee, Romanian, wake up from deadly slumber
The scourge of inauspicious barbarian tyrannies
And now or never to a bright horizon clamber
That shall to shame put all your enemies.
2
It’s now or never that we prove to the world
That in these veins still flows Roman blood
And in our hearts for ever we glorify a name
Triumphant in battles, the name of Trajan.
4
Behold, imperial shadows, Michael, Stephen, Corvinus
At the Romanian nation, your mighty progeny
With arms like steel and hearts of fire impetuous
“Live in liberty, or die” that's what they all decree.
11
Priests, raise the cross, as this army is Christian
Give it liberty and it's sanctified scope
We’d rather die in battle, with honorary glory
Than live again enslaved on our ancestral land.

I don’t have much to say about our anthem’s lyrics, but the melody isn’t to my liking. It’s very hard to sing. It has *exactly* the same problem as the anthem of the USA.

I feel like everyone knows it too well already.

Have Tuva anthem instead, the only good thing about that place: youtube.com/watch?v=x4zm9L4rIGw

>czechia
drunk anthem

OH SAY CAN YOU SEEEEE

E imn, nu e manea.

Poetic translation:

I shall always recognize you
by the dreadful sword you hold,
as the Earth with searching vision
you survey with spirit bold.
From the Greeks of old whose dying
brought to life and spirit free,
now with ancient valour rising
let us hail you, oh Liberty!

Attached: Ethnikos Hymnos.png (1153x858, 103K)

I'm only judging the verses written on the map, I have no idea about the full text.
>muh we will fight
Isn't what an anthem is all about? Except Belarus of course, they are peaceful people

>Wake up, Romanian, from the sleep of death
>Ukraine is not dead yet
What's with those grim defeatist verses?

Denial

"Arise, ye who refuse to be slaves!
With our flesh and blood, let us build a new Great Wall!
As China faces its greatest peril
From each one the urgent call to action comes forth.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Millions of but one heart
Braving the enemies' fire! March on!
Braving the enemies' fire! March on!
March on! March, march on!"

Though I despise the Communist Party, their choice of anthem is on point.

>To arms, to arms!
>For the Fatherland, fight!
>Against the cannons, march on, march on!
Why the hell are lyrics like this still allowed??

They heard from the placid shores of the Ipiranga
the resounding shout of a heroic folk
And the sun of Liberty in shining beams
shone in the homeland's sky at that instant

If the pledge of this equality
we managed to conquer with strong arm
In thy bosom, O Freedom,
our chest defies death itself!

O beloved,
idolized homeland,
Hail, hail!

Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray
of love and hope descends to earth
If in thy beautiful, smiling and limpid sky
the image of the (Southern) Cross blazes.

Giant by thine own nature
Thou art beautiful, strong, a fearless colossus
And thy future mirrors that greatness
Adored Land

Amongst thousand others
art thou, Brazil,
O beloved homeland
Of the sons of this ground
Thou art kind mother
Beloved homeland, Brazil

Eternally lying on splendid cradle
to the sound of sea and under deep sky light
Thou flashes, Brazil, crocket of America,
illuminated by the sun of New World

Than the more garish land,
thy smiling, pretty prairies have more flowers
"Our groves have more life"
"Our life" in thy bosom "more loves" (*)

O beloved,
idolized homeland,
hail, hail!

Brazil, of eternal love be a symbol
the starred labarum which thou displayst
And say the laurel-green of this pennant
"Peace in the future and glory in the past"

But if thou raises the strong mace of justice,
see that a son of thine flees not from battle,
nor do those who love thee fear their own death
Adored Land

Amongst thousand others
art thou, Brazil,
O beloved homeland
Of the sons of this ground
thou art kind mother
Beloved homeland, Brazil

>This is the current one i personally prefer the imperial one

Eh, it's actually rather sentimental. Gotta love how our anthem sounds like a tourism ad for hikers.
>Where is my home, where is my homeland,
>Water roars across the meadows,
>Pinewoods rustle among crags,
>The garden is glorious with spring blossom,
>Paradise on earth it is to see.
>And this is that beautiful land,
>The Czech land, my home,
>The Czech land, my home!

Romania has a history of oppression. We've been every major power's playground, and the anthem is meant to give the finger to everyone thinking they can put us down.

I know everyone already knows it, but I really like the star spangled banner, because instead of being about how beautiful our country is (it is the most beautiful I’d argue) it sings about our fight for freedom, and more specifically a battle during the war of 1812, which I think is at least fairly unique.

“Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?“

Hungarian anthem is basically a long "oh God why".

France Prešeren: A Toast

God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

Thou ancient, thou free, thou mountainous North
Thou quiet, thou joyful [and] fair!
I greet thee, most beautiful land upon earth,
/:Thy sun, Thy sky, Thy meadows green.:/

Thou art enthroned upon memories of great olden days,
When honored thy name flew across the earth,
I know that thou art and wilt remain what thou wast,
/:Yes, I want to live I want to die in the North:/

I forever want to serve thee, my beloved country,
Loyalty until death I want to swear thee,
Thy right I will protect with mind and with hand,
/: thy banner, the heroes carry high.:/

With God I shall fight for home and for hearth,
for Sweden, the beloved native soil.
I trade thee not, for anything in a world
/: No, I want to live, I want to die in the North.:/

And you think singing about it will change the fact that you're still a weak shithole...?

Note that these lyrics in particular are essentially danish, because it was written in a time where we still wrote in danish.

1.
Ja, vi elsker dette landet,
som det stiger frem
furet, vejrbidt over vandet,
med de tusen hjem.
Elsker, elsker det og tænker
på vor far og mor
og den saganat, som sænker
dromme på vår jord.

2.
Dette landet Harald bjærged
med sin kæmperad,
dette landet Håkon værged,
medens Ojvind kvad;
Olav på det land har malet
korset med sitt blod,
fra dets hoye Sverre talet
Roma midt imod.

3.
Bonder sine okser brynte,
hvor en hær drog frem;
Tordenskjold langs kysten lynte,
så den lystes hjem.
Kvinner selv stod op og strede
som de vare mænd;
andre kunde bare græde;
men det kom igen!

4.
Vistnok var vi ikke mange;
men vi strak dog til,
da vi provdes nogle gange,
og det stod på spil;
ti vi heller landet brænte,
end det kom til fald;
husker bare, hvad som hændte
ned på Fredrikshald!

5.
Hårde tider har vi dojet,
blev tilsidst forstodt;
men i værste nod blåojet
frihed ble oss fodt.
Det gav faderkraft at bære
hungersnod og krig,
det gav doden selv sin ære –
og det gav forlig.

6.
Fienden sit våben kasted,
op visiret fór,
vi med undren mod ham hasted;
ti han var vår bror.
Drevne frem påstand av skammen
gik vi soderpå;
nu vi står tre brodre sammen,
og skal sådan stå!

7.
Norske mand i hus og hytte,
tak din store Gud!
landet vilde han beskytte,
skont det morkt så ud.
Alt, hvad fædrene har kæmpet,
modrene har grædt,
har den Herre stille læmpet,
så vi vant vår ret.

8.
Ja, vi elsker dette landet,
som det stiger frem
furet, vejrbitt over vandet,
med de tusen hjem.
Og som fædres kamp har hævet
det af nod til sejr,
også vi, når det blir krævet,
for dets fred slår lejr.

This is the third part of the Algeria national anthem, one of my favorites

O France, the time of reproach has passed
And we have closed like a book;
O France, the day of reckoning is at hand
So prepare to receive from us our answer!
In our revolution is the end of empty talk;
and we have resolved that Algeria shall live –
So bear witness, bear witness, bear witness!

O our land Finland, our land of birth,
sound, the golden word!
There's no valley, no hill
no water, shore more precious
than this northern homeland
the dear land of our fathers!¨

Our land is poor, so it remains,
if you long for gold
A stranger sure abandons it,
but to us, the most precious land is this,
its wilds, islands, mainlands,
to us, they are golden.

They are dear to us
our rapids with their surges
the hummings of eternal pines
our starnights, the summers bright
all that with their pictures and songs
closed to heart.

Here with ploughs, swords, thoughts
our fathers fought,
when the day hid in the clouds
or shone with shines of happiness
here the nation of Finland, the most difficult
troubles they experienced.

This nation's battles who can
tell them, who?
When a war sounded in our valleys,
and frost brought the pain of hunger,
who measured the blood
and its sufferings?

Here has its blood flown
for our sake, too
here has it enjoyed its happiness
and sighed its worries
that nation, to which the most ancient
burden of ours was given.

Here we have a feeling excellent
and everything favourable,
although be it whatever luck
land fatherland is what we have.
What's sweeter in the world
and what's more precious?

And here is this land,
our eyes see it.
We can reach out a hand
and point at water, shore
and say: see, there's
our father's dearest land.

If we were accompanied to glory
even to golden clouds,
where we wouldn't cry
but most important joy the soul would get,
to this poor home
our will would be.

The homeland of truth and poet
the land with a thousand lakes
where our life gets protection,
you the land of memories and hopes,
always be, content with your luck,
free and joyful.

Your prosperity from its hide
shall break out once
yet our love it shall rise
your hope, joy in its brilliance,
and once, your song, the land of birth
shall get the highest echo.

Mexicans, at the cry of war
Make ready the steel and the bridle
And let the earth shake to the core
At the roar of the cannon
And let the earth shake to the core
At the roar of the cannon

Gird, oh country, your head with an olive wreath
Given by the divine archangel of peace
Since your eternal destiny was written in heaven
by the finger of God
But should a foreign enemy
Profane your ground with their sole
Think, oh beloved country, that heaven
Has given you a soldier in every son

Dear homeland! Dear homeland!
Your children swear
To exhale breath in your cause
If the bugle in its belligerent (warlike) tone
Summons them to fight with courage
You will get the olive garlands!
They will have a memory of glory!
You will get a laurel of victory!
They will have a tomb of honor!

Oh, God of our land! Oh, our country's God!

We praise your holy, holy name!
From the solar systems we will tie you a crown
your armies, all time manifest!

One day is a thousand years to you,
and thousand years; a day, and no more.
An eternal flower with a tear in its eye,
that praises its god, and then dies.

Iceland thousand years
Iceland thousand years!
An eternal flower with a tear in its eye,
that praises its god, and then dies.

Oh God, oh God! We fall far down
and sacrifice your burning, burning soul,
Father, our Lord from generation to generation,
we tell our most important tales.
We tell and we thank for a thousand years,
for you are our only shelter.
We tell and we thank with tears in our eyes,
for you created our fortune wheel.

Iceland's thousand years,
Iceland's thousand years!
Our dark and cold mornings, our fallen tears,
that warm up with the rising sun.

Oh, the God of our land! Oh, our country's God!

We live as waving, waving straws.
We die, if you aren't the light and the life,
that lifts us from the dust.

Oh, be the sweetest every morning,
our leader through troubled times.
And at nighttime, be our heavenly rest and our protector
and our lord on this road.

Iceland's thousand years,
Iceland's thousand years!

The nation shall grow with drying tears,
it will mature in Gods way.

Lithuania, our dear homeland,
Land of worthy heroes!
May your sons draw strength and vigor
From your past experience.

May your children always proudly
Choose the paths of virtue,
May they work towards your gain,
And that of all mankind.

May the sun of this land
Scatter all the gloom and dark,
With Truth and Light,
Guiding our steps forever.

May our love for Lithuania
Keep burning on in our hearts,
In Lithuania's dear name,
We shall stand together!

The official one is:

Na na na na na nananana na na na na na naa na
Na na na na na naaaa
Ni no na ni no naninoninionino ni no ni no ni na ni no ni no niiiiii
(Repeat)

Yes, we love this country
as it rises forth,
rugged, weathered, over the water,
with the thousands of homes, —
love, love it and think
of our father and mother
and the saga-night that lays
dreams upon our earth.
And the saga-night that lays
dreams upon our earth.

This country Harald united
with his army of heroes,
this country Håkon protected
whilst Oyvind sung;
upon the country Olav painted
with his blood the cross,
from its heights Sverre spoke
up against Rome.

Farmers their axes sharpened
wherever an army advanced,
Tordenskjold along the coastline thundered
so that we could see it back home.
Even women stood up and fought
as if they were men;
others could only cry
but that soon would end!

Sure, we were not many
but we were enough,
when we were tested sometimes,
and it was at stake;
we would rather burn our land
than to declare defeat;
just remember what happened
down at Fredrikshald!

Hard times we have coped with,
were at last disowned;
but in the worst distress, blue-eyed
freedom was to us born.
It gave (us) father's strength to carry
famine and war,
it gave death itself its honour -
and it gave reconciliation.

The enemy threw away his weapon,
up the visor went,
we, in wonder, to him hastened,
because he was our brother.
Driven forth to a stand by shame
we went to the south;
now we three brothers stand united,
and shall stand like that!

Norwegian man in house and cabin,
thank your great God!
The country he wanted to protect,
although things looked dark.
All the fights fathers have fought,
and the mothers have wept,
the Lord has quietly moved
so we won our rights.

Yes, we love this country
as it rises forth,
rugged, weathered, above the sea,
with those thousand homes.
And as the fathers' struggle has raised
it from need to victory,
even we, when it is demanded,
for its peace will encamp

Samefagging here - but I am qualityposting so it's halal.

An interesting thing about the national anthem of Iceland (Lofsöngur) is that it is very religious on the surface; but is actually secular (no particular deity is mentioned, no quotes to any scripture or characters/concepts therein)

It expresses the very interesting religious, philosophical and metaphysical views of Matthías Jochumsson, highly unusual for their time but also today.

Matthías was a Unitarian (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unitarianism) , but his beliefs were essentially pantheist (everything is god, put very simply).

He believed that time was relative and essentially not real. To the almighty that was his view of God, the past, present, and future all happen at once and in no order or at any particular speed. Which is actually a lot closer to what many physicists believe time is like today.

"One day is a thousand years to you,
and thousand years; a day, and no more."

That's why the anthem is also ahistorical, other than the "Iceland thousand years!" it doesn't reference any events or people at all, because in the metaphysical and religious view of Matthías, all human history, mankind itself is infinitesimally minuscule. It's irrelevant.

Once you understand; those were his views, and you re-read the lyrics you understand how deep and interesting they actually are.

They're essentially thanking some unknown almighty force for existing for 1000 years (with very impressive continuity) and begging for your measly and unthinkably tiny existence (compared to this almightiness) to continue, and swearing fealty.

Other than most national anthems, it doesn't say Iceland is great, strong etc. it says we are impossibly tiny, a speck of sand on a beach that washes away.

I really like our anthem, it really makes me think.

our old pre 1930s anthem was way better desu

Whoever has Dutch blood flowing in their veins,
Free of foreign blemishes;
Whose heart glows for king and country,
Rejoice in song as we do!
He sings with us, united in purpose,
At the top of his voice
This festive song, pleasing to God,
For fatherland and king (2x)

The divinity on her heavenly throne
Serenaded and honoured
Favourably disposed to our sound
Keeps the holy ear turned:
She sings first-rate, in conjunction with the heavenly choir
Operating on a higher plain
This full and hearty song
For King and fatherland (2x)

Pervade loudly, from within our festive roar
This prayer unto heaven
Protect the monarch, protect his House
And us, his family
Redeem your promise with the very same wish in our latest song
Protect, oh Lord, for ever the King
And the beloved fatherland (2x)

Wait, isn't this ISIS's national anthem?

Sounds like some chinkified version of la marseillaise.
