Colombia and Venezuela politically dislike/hate each other, explained. As of Ecuador, the country is part of ALBA, but Colombia doesn't hold too much grudges against them, union can be a possibility, however, I fear the power would too much centered around Bogota, since Ecuador is a small country, in terms of area and population.

Honestly besides you we only ever hear about you, Brazil, Columbia, Nicaruagua (more so recently) and Venezual in the news. We are aware of like Chile but that's more from travel shows or places like Costa Rica because of tourism. I'm obviously not counting PR since it's ours.

MERCOSUR was meant to foster political integration in the long-run kind of like an EU for south america.

But becoming part of a supernational org meant giving up a degree of autonomy by the national govs. Authoritarian govs are much more resistant to that than liberal govs. Venezuela actually backtracked and this coincided with the push of anti-democratic policies.

That's factually untrue though. The caribbean has strong African presence that doesn't exist in Mesoamerica, Southern Andes and Southern cone. Also the native tribes present across the territory differed vastly from each other. I wouldn't expect a clueless leaf to know this though
