Lol, how is it defensive? It's used very aggressively, to intimidate or berate people. If you mean that the people who act that way are motivated by a perceived threat to the west or christianity, then I mean, sure that's true to an extent. But by that logic you could make the case that people who shout allahu akhbar at non-muslims are also acting defensively, since in their mind they are responding to encroaching western influence that is subverting their culture and religon, changing people's customs and morals. I'd say people who zealously shout either phrase are equally just cunts.

Comparing Cathedral bells to an Islamic phrase doesn't make sense. That's like comparing an Islamic prayer calling from a Minaret to a Christian phrase like "Jesus loves you" and concluding Islam is more aesthetically pleasing.

Yeah, the phrase allahu akhbar is sung in the call to prayer. Though it is understandable people in the west wouldn't know that. Here it's mostly associated with terrorists yelling it in gruff, ugly voices. Something Dawkins is definitely aware of and wanted people to visualize when he wrote it.

I agree. If he had wanted people to think of what comes from the Minaret he would have said "prayer calling" rather than "Allahu Akbar". His intention was to bring to mind terrorists screaming "Allahu Akbar" and compare it to Cathedral bells.

It's hard to imagine much of a difference when it's being shouted loud enough for an entire city to hear them. The difference between the two uses of the phrase are negligible.

Because this is a man who cannot spend a single waking minute without fulminating that Christianity might be happening someplace, somewhere. I suppose it's not really a contradiction per se but it's a bit rich to loathe the religion and still want the trappings that come with it.

No such thing. British culture is rooted in Catholicism. Everything good about Anglicanism came from the Catholic Church. Everything bad about Anglicanism came from the "reformation". The only semi-respectable Anglicans are Anglo-Cathlolics who reject the Evangelical and Liberal trends within the Church.
The Islamic call to prayer is far more than simply "Allahu Akbar". So the difference is not negligible as you suggest.

I prefer the sound of Cathedral bells to the Islamic call to prayer as well. But Gregorian Chants in Latin is where it's undeniably at. Something neither the Muslims nor Anglicans have.

There are plenty of folks who love to bemoan and complain about how terrible christianity and religion is, but then also find themselves wanting to argue for just how gosh darn wonderful and superior to all others western culture/civilization/society is.
