Mass effect 2 is the best one. And Mass effect 3 has the best fighting style, but the main issue was that despite having a relatively good story, the navigation interface was a disaster. You could easily overlook certain side quests. And the items were kinda hard to understand in what situations would they be better at. Also, the Codex was pretty damn useless. The bars could have been better, GTA V incorpored the discotheques system and it's just great what they did with it.

It is a good series, but after the solid game the second was, the third just plainly disappointed in almost every aspect.

Mass Effect 2 is overrated and mediocre desu. The characters are all fucking assholes except for the returning ones, the gameplay is the definition of average and sluggish, and everything is super-exaggerated compared to the first and third games. The story not even pretending to make sense (hey let's trust the guys who tried to murder us in the last game and gather 12 guys to invade a planet lol) doesn't help.

they'd have to create a canon shepard and pick one of the endings to be canon. there's too many variables through all three games for a proper sequel with save importing to be feasible

Played a good bit of the way into the first one last month, got to where you see the red robot hologram bad guy and kind of just lost it interest. Pretty much agree with you, shallow story and unimpress gameplay

The only good/decent ME is the first one. ME2 is just a Gears of War oversimplified RPG who's selling point is dating aliens. ME3 is mediocre at best, and the fact that you need to complete every single fetch sidequest to get the Good Destruction ending is absolute garbage. Not to mention how the ending is shit even with the Extended Cut. Honestly Mass Effect as a whole is insanely overrated, and a giant waste of potential.

This is not a real problem. Many other franchises had branching stories and just decided on one. Fallout, for example, bases the entire second game on the premise that the protagonist of the first helped Shady Sands turn into the NCR. So does the fourth.

EA games murdered the original ending.
I heard in some interview that originally the plan was for Reapers to destroy every race not for giggles, but because with development of psychic powers. The psychic powers basically create energy out of nowhere and thus contribute to the overall energy produced in Universe - and as a result, Universe, which would normally die with shrinking and new Bing Bang, will reach the tipping point if psychics will exist - it will die of thermal death, permanently expanding till it dies forever.
Reapers were exactly that - the Keepers of Life, who made sure that we would never reach such a point and that the Life will always keep existing, reborn every time.
So, Shepard doesn't face some retarded choices, but some really hard choice - he can fight against Reapers - and doom the Universe with inevitable death and decay, or submit to them. Now, look back at the ending we had and cry.

I really do wonder why they ultimately changed it, weren't they rushing the final game and had to change the ending due to that? Still, now that ME3 and Andromeda but went up in flames, doubt we'll ever see anything like the original plotline, or what I actually want, an Arkham City style game of Garrus' time as Archangel.

Jacob has his moments, but yeah he's insanely forgettable.
Worst of all, I hear the original writer for Mass Effect had left the team so the most important game in the trilogy was written by someone who probably had no idea where to head it. The only way to fix ME3 is to assume the Indoctrination Theory is true.

They had the overall idea ready before the 3rd game obviously.
The thing is that EA games are retards who only wanted cheap profit and asked to make a less complicated stuff than thermal death of universe because american school kids wouldn't dig it. As a result - we have a shitty ending which doesn't fit the overall story.
The rushed part comes from EA killing Bioware and basically milking the franchise at that point. You can see it with Andromeda, which was a blatant cashgrab.
