The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) says its female athletes were sexually harassed by Russian athletes during the ongoing European Universities Games in Portugal, with one incident turning into an attempted rape.
OLL says the women faced both verbal and physical harassment from Russian athletes and a coach in their accommodation over several days.
The organisation in charge of the biennial games, European University Sports Association (EUSA), “completely failed in handling the case, as well as in protecting the young women,” OLL argues.
“Neither the on-site security guards nor the employees […] did anything to interfere with the harassment, not even when it escalated into full-blown physical assault.”
Iltalehti reports that Norwegian athletes also faced harassment during the games and witnessed some of the events affecting the Finns.
